so what is it with these stupid things? Enjoying the outside with my BBQ going at full chat and these damn things are all over my wine!! Never have any problem with my Kronunburg being attacked by these blighters . Is there a cure as trying to enjoy my 59 Grand Cru and need to get my cheese board out soon. PS will they come for my vintage Port too?.
Could you put out a decoy, half eaten apple perhaps..... When they take 'the bait', in this case fruit unleash a fiery torrent of aerosol can and lighter on them... Or to be slightly more humane just dispense fly spray... They were a real nuisance when i lived in Sydney. Fruit wasn't meant to be carried over state borders because of the little shits, I think it may have been Queensland that had signs up on borders
We get these pesky little blighters, I can recommend a very effective trap. You need a glass, some rolled up paper and some white wine vinegar. Pour some white wine vinegar into a glass, make a funnel from the paper and put it in the glass ( sharp end first) but not so deep as it gets wet. Seemingly they are attracted to the vinegar, fly in and are drowned as the funnel acts as a barrier preventing them from getting out. Works very well in the house, not tried it outside though.
got similar for wasps, but using watered down parma violets (watered down honey or other fragrant sugary stuff works, too). moved from the home made version to a bought version that, in the height of summer, will tend to get 10-20 wasps per trap per day. will give the vinegar a try for the fruit fly when they seem to appear in the house. To keep them out of your drinks just put a beer mat/coaster over the top...That worked for me, to eradicate them from your garden is tough but looks like some good suggestions above to keep them in check... I still like the flame thrower option
Similar thing for Wasps. Put a half full/empty bottle of Coca Cola out and the little blighters can't resist going in for the sugar and caffeine. It doesn't kill them, but it gets 'em buzzin
Or you could place some netting food umbrellas over the food outdoors: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Two-White...346213?hash=item1ec774e725:g:0oUAAOSwdGFYvZQJ
