999 Sub Frame Silencer Lug

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Wasted Time Lord, Oct 15, 2021.

  1. Mounting the number plate assembly I notice the Termi's got a lot of play. Take the pillion pad off:

So, obviously it needs welding. And stripping in that area. Petrol tank off as well. Any suggestions and recommendations welcome!

  2. Err - they all do that?

  3. Jeez - that's a big fracture. Does that gap close up when it's all warmed up?

  4. There are two bolts under the seat that hold the back of the exhaust, so it is still secure to the subframe. F94BBC34-6B0A-4F31-900A-184691F82A55.jpeg

  5. Would that be a Bip -> Mono conversion?

  6. Yes, currently 50% doneo_O

  7. Not a 5 min job is it.

  8. Subframe is easy to remove as is the exhaust.

Turning a bip subframe to a mono is not a 5 min job.

  9. Yeah, I was going to add that explainer, then thought post it separate and deleted it, and now I'm not sure what I'm replying to!

I was idly thinking of doing the conversion if I had to take the entire frame/bike to whoever's going to weld it. Especially if painting it a colour they don't sell the pillion pads in. But I'm not sure which were plans thought up in a fit of pique at the idea of having to dismantle the bike or pay someone else to.

If - as you confirm - the sub-frame is easy to remove, I'm a lot happier than I was this morning!

  10. It is. You'll need to support the exhaust. May I suggest a block of wood between the exhaust and rear tyre.

  11. Cheers.

And I'd give myself a WTF, but it won''t let me.

  12. Your lug looks forged/stamped, whereas mine looks cast. Seems to me cast was asking for it and I'd be better off putting something less brittle on there rather than having the original re-affixed?

This was how I converted my subframe to a Mono one. Added extra bracing and added a new frame with grommet for the mono Ducati plug for the fairing to plug into. Also used plastic plugs to the open frame, then painted.

  15. Well, I've got a new subframe coming tomorrow. Am I going to have to take the tank off?

  16. You don’t have to take the tank off but it would make things easier in the long run.
Removing the tank is very simple.
