Hi All Picked up my 2002 996 yesterday and already i'm covered in grease. I stopped off at a bike shop after a gentle 25 mile ride today after 100 miles of motorway yesterday and someone spotted swarf/little bits of metal all over the back wheel. I cleaned it up with an old cloth lying about and hoping it was the brake pads rode home very gently not using the rear brake. When I got home there was still some more swarf, but not as much. I have checked the pads and they have loads of life in them. The swarf is also over where the chain runs over the swing arm. Also, is it normal for the rear wheel to be attached like this? Feeling a little stressed here! Thanks guys
Most likely the Cush drives are backing out of the sprocket carrier and gently milling themselves and the chain adjuster to oblivion. Take a look at the interface between the inside face of the sprocket carrier and the swing arm. The Cush drives should be flush with the back face of the carrier but they can move to the right (looking from the back of the bike) and contact the chain adjuster. Hope that helps.
It can be bad. It may mill off the "pegs" of the eccentric chain adjuster and then you will need a new one. Easy job to sort out the Cush drives. Recommend a Renthal quick release carrier with flanges to prevent exactly what you appear to have.
There has been a couple of quick change carriers for sale on here lately, Nelson was selling one, well worth fitting. Steve

So is it just a case of taking the back wheel off, sticking some new ones in? 1 to 10, how tricky is this? And how do I know if there is any other damage? As I bought this from a bike shop yesterday, have I any come back? They said 3 months warranty.
The wheel doesn't have to come off, it can all be done from the chain side, if left it will wear the concentric adjuster, it should be repaired before any more damage is done. Steve
It's worth stating that this is a very well known issue....I take it that the Garage isn't a Ducati one?
Unfortunately they are 100 miles away. Oh well, here we go. I guess the phone call tomorrow will result in me either shouting about how helpful they are or ranting about their customer service. I heard Ducat ownership was eventful but I was hoping to get past 1 day. Thanks for all your very prompt help guys. Will update you all tomorrow!
