Switching Lcd Display From ºf To ºc (and Clock To 24-hour)?

Discussion in 'Sport Touring' started by Julian Wells, Jul 6, 2018.

  1. The LCD on my ST2 displays ºF and a 12-hour clock.

Close inspection suggests that there's a space where a ºC symbol might show up, and logic suggests that there ought to be a software switch (see what I did there?) to change to ºC and 24-hour clock.

But I can't find anything in the owner's handbook or workshop manual about this. Any suggestions?

  2. I tried to do the same on my ST2 but after much research found that it could not be done. Hope you have more luck.

  3. The temperature display on ST series can't be changed. Early bikes showed ºF, later ones ºC. I think they are all 12 hour clock.

  4. Hmmm … doesn't sound promising. On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that customers in continental Europe would tolerate ºF displays.

  5. I wanted to get rid of the F not because I live in Europe, but because I was taught the metric system at school.

  6. I was taught ºF (age-related clue) and still find it more intuitive for weather news. But I find watching the temperature of my ST2 climb past 212ºF rather stressful, and while the relevant mental arithmetic is hardly difficult it's best not attempted while negotiating London traffic.
No living continentals will have learnt anything but ºC, of course.

  7. Some detective work: first I checked the very useful colour wiring diagram for the 1998 ST2 that I found on-line (unfortunately I can’t offhand recall where).

The output from the temperature sensor (presumably an analogue current) goes direct to the LCD, where the electronics presumably convert it to the digital readout.

http://www.desmoduck.com/ shows the LCD module for 2001 and 2003 ST2s as 404.1.003.1A and specifies that it is ºF (http://www.desmoduck.com/search.php?partnumber=404.1.003.1A)

Cross checking with my e-version of the parts book (915.1.078.1E, issued 05-01: page 95) shows the corresponding item as 404.1.002.1A Module LCD (°C)

So it seems that one can have ºC if one can find a s/h module from a continental breaker.

For info, some other similar part no.s from http://www.duc-store.de/epages/1549...ps/15495490/Products/"OEM/ Ersatzteilnummern" are

    404.1.001.2A
    404.1.002.1A
    404.1.003.1A
    404.1.004.1A
    404.1.005.1A

  8. I think they were also market related. For the ST2/4, the US and UK got Fahrenheit but the rest got Celcius. By the ST4s, UK as well as Europe had Celcius displays.
They seem to be a common failure point so are hard to find. These prices are taking the piss though.

  9. From the ST4 parts list for European models :

  10. Just recalibrate your brain 250 stop. They don't go much over 220 in traffic.

  11. And how!

However, if one is simply interested in having a working LCD regardless of ºF/ºC, it seems that they may be fairly simple to fix, at least if the problem is minor water ingress:

Given that we are talking 20-year-old tech (the electronic equivalent of acetylene lighting) I suspect that more complex repairs would be in reach of someone with detailed electronic knowledge and a steady hand with a soldering iron).
