T9 Grey Swing Arm Removal

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cream_Revenge, Nov 9, 2016.

  1. Hey

Once the right bolt is off, just drift it out? I see the left side has a hex head (13mm?) is this just for tightening or does it need unscrewing before I drift the bolt?

Does the chain need cutting off?

    TIA

  2. Well I drifted it out. Gord knows how I'll get the new swing arm back in, that was tight to get her out.

Can only assume I need to cut chain off.

  3. Chain will have a rivet link which needs pushing out (with the correct tool - not your grinder) @Old rider had a very different experience recently regarding how tight they are in there :Wideyed:

  5. You need a big solid block of steel to put behind the chain, a rivet link punch, grinder and a big hammer (I think you have a big hammer collection?) and preferably a mate to hold the steel block while you rivet the link over and hurt your thumb. :)

  6. Found this if you want to buy a proper tool to do it instead...

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Ah yes, I did indeed.
I stupidly followed an assertion that you could knock the swingarm pin out, clean and grease everything, then knock it back in, all in a few minutes.
Turned out the advice didn't apply to a 999 and my unsupported swingarm dropped out of alignment. Well actually, it was the engine that dropped.
Got it all back ok but It was a bit of a nightmare for a short while.

  9. I don't know how the engine dropped, there is a big bolt above the rearsets and the swingarm bole that bolts the engine in the frame!

  10. The engine and frame will have dropped together once the swingarm bolt was removed, the spacers on 749/999's don't locate 'in' the frame like a 916 they just butt up against it

  11. Exactly so.

  12. Ah, that makes sense, wondering how engine moved in frame :). FWIW, I have mine on an ABBA with SA removal adapter.
