Anyone got any recommendations on if I should use standard ball bearings in my headstock or go to roller bearings? I'd appreciate any info from anyone who made this change.....pro's or con's. Thanks Anth
I swapped my 916 head bearings for tapered as they were due a change and tapered are supposed to be better - to be honest I can't tell any difference so wouldn't swap them unless they need replacing but if you've got to replace them anyway then go with the tapered.
Thanks m8.... I'm putting a new yoke and stem in that has no bearings on, so I do need some of some description. I think rollers are winning at the minute due to the decreased wear rate on the stem and no one being able to offer a reason why not to use them. Cheers
Taper rollers best IMO.....different contact surface so less wear, easier adjustment.....easier to grease properly. AL
Yeah a local engineering place that have done some CNC stuff for me before, have said no problem...just need to get the new one to them.
Oh good....I made someone happy for once...... Actually if you think about it, it's logical.......A ball bearing is non-adjustable (two in the case of a headstock) so to be adjusted tighter means compressing the middle races towards each other, meaning that the balls themselves are being pushed against the 'sides' of the running grooves in both middle and outer races, which isn't the intention of a ball bearing working properly......particularly as the balls have only a small contact point....and it's easy to overtighten them, thus damaging the races. ......but with taper rollers, the rollers themselves make full width contact with the outer race.......and in effect they can slide up and down against the outer race, meaning there is more precise adjustment and choice of adjustment.....plus it is less likely overtightening will cause damage......in other words you have to be a right nob to b*gger up a taper roller. AL.
I can't wait for my post telling you I've b*ggered up a set of roller bearings now.... I haven't yet, but will now you've said that!
OK......'Nob' in anticipation.........er, I think I will rephrase that.......'Nob' in advance....... AL
Thanks for the vote of confidence AL....... I've ordered a set of SKF taper roller bearings now.....watch this space as they say.!!!
Yup! I think I have every thing ready now....just need to get my arse into gear to fit them, I might wait till winter tho.
Lol.....True but I've got nothing else to tinker with this winter. Ah lithium grease...that's what I haven't got yet....some nice grease. Any recommendations before I go off to read up on what to use?
