I subscribe to the 'The Times' and looked this morning. I managed to miss an article that mentions my town (Berkeley) and the hospital where I spent about 3 months last year. learning to walk (The Vale). My sister emailed me the link. I feel a bit stupid - well, more stupid than usual. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...k?shareToken=c0ec0b9afd422e7e5dad833925081705
My Mum (and my Grandmother's family) was from Sharpness and taught in Berkeley school on the 40s. ..... and it's correctly pronounced BErk-lee not BARK-lee btw
Yes, as in tree bark - or Mary Hinge barking properly with none of this "woof, woof" shite! But............... more importantly......... I had my leg bandages changed at the Surgery today AND I got a 'flu jab - which I thought was bad shit as my sister had one years ago when they first started and I thought that they gave you a bit of 'flu to immunise you, after she was ill. I was told that this was ill-informed tosh (which I do) and so I got it. I did feel a bit of a prick...
You know that Sharpness docks did feature in the first series of "His Dark Materials" as well as the Gloucester/Sharpness canal and Berkeley Castle?
Nope. Not as in tree 'bark'........Berk as in 'work' or 'lurk'. At least, that's how my Nan always insisted (and she was about as local as you can get).
I think that I read somewhere the name may of came from tree bark, but it is disputed, and I think you're right. "Berkeley" as in "burkeley",
According to Wiki, "Berkeley was first recorded in 824 as Berclea, from the Old English for "birch lea".[3]"
