Thoughts On This Bike...?

  1. Hi,

As some of you may well know, I'm in the process of getting my 848 ready to sell. I've had her from new for the last 5 years and want to try something else.

I loved the geometry of my old 748 BP (put the head stock on steepest setting and popped about 10mm through the yokes) Fantastic through the bends; but she lacked enough grunt in my old age, hence I got the 848, but now I want a bit more grunt than the 848 can provide...

Shortlist is either an RSV4, 1098 or perhaps an 1199 or 899. (probably in that order)

Then I saw the bike in the link below. 996 with 1098 engine; could be a match made in heaven; or a nightmare. My plan would be to turn it into a track only bike (gonna get a scrambler for nipping to work on).

    Ducati 996, 1098 Engine! 916 998 1198 155rwhp | eBay

I have no experience with hybrids, so very keen to hear all experienced thoughts on the matter.

Two concerns spring to mind: Firstly, the warning light that is mentioned in the post (must generate a fault code??) and secondly; is the 996 frame suitable for the more powerful 1098 engine?

I see some advantages; could be a perfect blend of geometry and grunt; and many of my 848 trick bits should fit (QS, TC and forged wheels). Disadvantages is a big step into the unknown.

All thoughts most welcome. In fact they are encouraged! :upyeah:

    Cheers,

    Bob

  2. just buy a 1098, then you know the frame works etc, and your 848 bits will fit.

  3. Could be risky mate be a ball bag if it goes wrong,be better buying a 1098s and tune that ,all bits in the right place where they belong.

  4. I saw that one a few weeks ago. At first I liked the idea but you'll never know whether or not the conversion was done properly or just thrown together from a few odds & side he had kicking about. It is always going to be a risk as you don't know how it came about.

  5. That was for sale a few weeks ago, I thought it went.
My road bike is a similar hybrid, (there are few others around) mines a 748R frame with a 1098SF engine. The frame has no probs with the extra power.
The geometry would be the same as your old 748, but different to your 848.
Yes - there would be a fault code and an error light on the dash, CHrisW on here can sort you a new ecu/reflash with this disabled.
You're right in that your QS, and forged wheels will fit, not sure about the TC though. Wont you need the TC loom?
Here's a recent pic of mine :Snaphappy:

  6. Personally I wouldn't touch it unless I knew and trusted that the work was done to a good standard.

    Buy a 1098, job done.

  7. Just curious, why did you not mention the 1198 in your list?

  8. I'm sure one of us London based members would go and look at that bike for you Bob, it's not far from where i work. I'm not the most mechanically minded though, but can tell when a bike won't start or idle properly!

  9. No reason for omitting the 1198... Need to understand difference between that and the 1098 (other than 100cc!)

A glass or two of wine last night and I had convinced myself that I should try an 1199... But that may be unaffordable...

When I was a kid I had to pretend that my bike was smaller capacity than it reall was else my Dad wouldn't let me buy it (I once convinced him my 380 CZ was a 175...) nowadays I have to convince her indoors that it didn't cost as much as it really did...

For the money I'd need for a basic 1199 I could get tricked up RSV4...

If the 1198 is just a more powerful 1098 then I might be inclined to try something else... Whilst the 848 was a massive performance uplift to my 748, I felt the geometry of the 748 better... Guessing then1*98s will feel the same as the 848, just more grunt...

That's what attracts me to this bike in the link... Will have to give it some serious thought...

If money were no object I'd get a 1299, but that's not the case I'm afraid...

    Cheers,

    Bob
