Tips for cleaning matt leathers, please.

  1. I've got a very nice leather jacket (albeit with a Triumph logo - sorry), and I want to clean, treat, and if possible waterproof it. But it's got a matt finish leather, and all the conditioners I've used tend to make the leather shinier. Any idea what I can use to condition the leather and give it at least a little water repellancy without ending up looking like Alvin Stardust?

  2. I've just used some black Nikwax on my matt finish leathers, and I'm quite impressed with it.

It goes on like the bottled shoe-polish, with a sponge applicator attached to the tube. You rub it in using the sponge and then buff it off with a clean cloth. It has helped with the water repellency as some light rain was clearly beading off it the other day.

It does add a bit of a shine, but not as much as some of the others that I have tried.

I reckon its worth a try.

  3. I'ver never noticed that the Dainese leather cleaning kits make the leathers that shiny.
I don't usually use the actual cleaner since the guy at Swift leathers in about 1990 told me that the best thing to use was just a little water with a smidgeon of detergent for bug and dirt removal.
Then the Dainese milk stuff just gets wiped over. You don't have to buff it to a shine (and I normally don't bother much). Maybe will make your jacket a little shinier, but you won't exactly be in Alvin Stardust land.

  4. I use Mr Sheen leather wipes - sad but true , they are very good at cleaning off general fly splat and nice and handy

  5. Just tell Matt to clean them himself the lazy git

  6. I have some stuff called LEDERFEIN that enables you to wash them in the machine, then reproof them, I did a set of SPYKE leathers a few years ago and they came up like new......

  7. You ask it very nicely.....they have sharp teeth !

  9. No they arent Michel, I can smell you coming towards my workshop when you reach Finchingfield !

  10. NikWax products for me.

  11. Good to know, my jacket is matt black too and has loads of flies splatted on it that could do with cleaning off.

  12. No need to apologise for having a Triumph logo on your jacket,a good few on here have Triumphs too.Be proud:upyeah:

  13. try scotchgard from shoe shops, nourinhing cream and then spray. Alternatively if you know anyone has just had stargard applied to their car rob their kit and dress your leathers with it :upyeah:

  14. They are middle eastern mink and own their own oil fields

  15. So you think

  16. furygan furiciur grease works well, it does add a little shine initially but you can user a soft brush to diffuse it

within day or 2 matt finish is back to normal

  17. Keeping this going as I have a slightly different leather cleaning issue. Due to doing a trackday recently I got some stick-on velcro patches for my kneesliders. As these patches began to separate from the leathers, I decided to peel them off before I lost a kneeslider. I'll get them stitched on in due course - but in the meantime, how do I get the glue off? I've tried a hairdryer, vaseline, turps - still looks a bit grim and more importantly picks up stones
