Titanium Bolts For Speed Sensor Pick Up?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Etherion, Sep 6, 2020.

  1. Hi all,

I had a very quick question - one of my bikes picks up the speed from the speed sensor based on the bolts on my rear brake disc - i was looking to change to titanium bolts.

I am led to believe that speed sensors work on magnetic fields and therefore titanium bolts wont' work - just wanted to confirm before i decided to order or not.

    Thanks!

  2. Think you already know the answer.
    Ti is not magnetic enough.

  3. If they are Torx, you can silicon small ball bearings in the heads. A lot of hassle though.

  4. Thanks both for the confirmation - will get stainless instead of the rear brake disc!
    Thanks!

  5. Many stainless steels are also not sufficiently magnetic for this application.

  6. I seem to recall I had this issue on my 749, and had to change bolts back after fitting stainless.

Mind you, I don't know what was wrong with the traditional method of running a cable to the front wheel? Failures of cable and/or gearbox were pretty rare on those, and straightforward to replace even if they did.
