Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by m@tt, Jun 5, 2020.

  1. where can one buy titanium metric nuts and bolts in bulk .. or at least more than single items , for a small fortune , from the usual suspects ?

    Thanks

  2. Try John at JB in Brighouse. He’s got a large stock of Ti nuts and bolts and is cash happy! ;)

  3. What I find is... if you get a price from pro bolt or the likes, deduct about 75%, that’s what the cost should be.
Can’t remember exactly how much he charged me last time. Something like M6 and below about £1.50. M8 and above, a couple of quid.

  4. You could try RaceBolt, https://raceboltuk.com/. Not the cheapest but good quality, my dry clutch conversion side case has a set of their fastenings fitted instead of the Ducati OEM magnesium alloy, single use bolts. Andy

  8. I have also just used race fasteners - very good value and fast delivery.

They do some bike specific kits but it actually works out cheaper if you know what you need and just order by size and type.

    Also got some from https://www.rsrmoto.com/

Very happy with both for service and quality.

Weight comparison of some of them below.

  9. Can someone advise if you need to change the locking compound or grease, say from Copaslip to Aluslip...
I've noticed some strange interactions on LEAD battery terminals where Copaslip has been used... on those just wire wool preparation and plain old grease seems best (visually).

  10. Not 100% sure but think molycote is recommend for titanium to titanium to stop galling
So I just put a smear on wherever I use titanium

  11. Air con, dissimilar metals and electricity. You have some of the conditions for corrosive effects similar in principle to cathodic protection systems for pipelines, chuck in some electrolyte such as road salt or an acidic atmosphere from battery venting and it all gets a bit complicated. Lead acid battery terminals should be cleaned up with light abrasive or wire brush and then given light smear with a non metallic based grease (not lithium, copper, molybdenum or any of the other metal based ones) which is traditionally Vaselene or any other petroleum grease.
Most of the proper thread anti seize/lubricant/locking compounds are non metallic/non conductive for the same reason. Best to stick with the materials by Loctite and others that are designed for threads in applications where the dissimilar metals issue will always be a risk
