As my bike has been idle for a while ive been looking at investing in some new fasteners as part of the old girls recommissioning...(916 Sp) These would include front brake disc bolts, sprocket, rear wheel (both sides), swing arm and fork pinch bolts, and front wheel bolts.. Ive seen several listed as 'grade 5 Ti', but ive also seen several aluminium options (not for certain applications obviously)...what are the pros and cons of replacing the OE parts...ie safety concerns, and are there any other precautions i'd need to take, for instance, specific details on anti seizing compounds etc....ive heard that copper slip can create galvanisation when used with aluminium... So, if Ti is safe, would i need to use a specific anti seizing compound? Is it simply better to replace them with new OE, or stainless etc?? i want to replace the aged parts, preferably upgrade them, but not at the expense of safety, longevity or bragging right..what works on the track (where the bikes are constantly stripped and rebuilt, dont have to deal with pot holes and the like) isnt necessarily the best option for the road.. Any advice would be great from those in the know, or from those that have experience of this dilemma... Cheers guys
Non stressed bolts - alloy (engine casing etc) Stessed - Titanium Axle Nuts x 3 - Titanium swing arm & Fork pinch bolts - titanium Dics bolts - titanium (though I never had done this) OE or SS (some peeps dont recommend SS) Caliper bolts - Titanium Foot rest hanger bolts - Not Alloy (titanium, oe or SS) Clutch and brake lever bolts - Alloy (gulp-they are torqued to recommended settings) Clip on bolts - Alloy (gulp-they are torqued to recommended settings) Exhast hanger bolts - Alloy (non sheared last season) Yokes - OE, Titanium, SS I only use copper slip on brake pad backing, just a little light oil lube on most others. Hairspray for handlebar grips. And then I fuel and play. This is all on race bikes, so they get a regular chacking/dismantling/rebuilding.
Yeah copaslip on Ti bolts and dont forget Ti is heavier than Ali for things like sprocket nuts and font axle nut.
As said Ti likes to ball up easy so must use some lube, also watch your torque values as most quote dry , also it's not as super strong as people think so watch out with Allen heads etc... Me I love the stuff!
What M10 (1.25) x 55 in stainless? http://www.pro-bolt.com/stainless-s...ad4fe04e2ba1&length=252&thread_washer_dia=188
Interesting...MR called them Monday to order and they said they only did 55mm in Ti...Cranker sent me great link for Ti at similar price to SS
Oh, we'll I guessed you want OEM style caliper bolts for your forks? No 55 races spec SS but standard Hex head in SS 55.. just depends what style bolts mate, I ran the taper heads on my Ducati as don't mind the OEM look, but run custom race spec on my Ohlins Blade with GP calipers, all Ti race spec in all formats for race teams on PB site. Im a trade dealer for PB
Tbh I quite like the std dome headed bolts. Btw I tried to find your place a couple of times, found the reclaim yard but not you bat cave...
arthur, could you PM me with some prices of the bolts i mentioned if poss? if you only deal with trade accounts then fairenoughski, no problem.. nudge nudge wink wink
