I have seen that i can get a 1299 base model for my budget, and am a little confused about the differences in the electronics on the bikes. I know the S has the suspension and lighter wheels, but is the rest them same? I also cannot seem to find a decent review of the base model as all the magazine tests i have found are all for the S model. I have read through a lot of the posts on here is the extended warranty available in the UK, as i cannot seem to find any info on the Ducati UK web site. Thanks for the answers. Regards Dave
And the wheels, and the LED lights but think that's it. Does the 1299 come with extra data logger stuff? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The s also gets a bit of carbon and the up down adjuster for changing settings on the fly, with this price increase due in Jan it may be a good idea to do a deal now.Ever red warranty Ducati - Ducati Ever Red - Ever Red Details
As above, all I can think of that's different is the Suspension, non LED lights (lighter ironically), and the wheels. The ride quality is noticeably different between the two. The base suspension feels quite trashy on anything less than good road surfaces compared to the silky smooth active Ohlins on the S. It's not that the base is bad, it's just that it's setup like a race bike so it doesn't like poor surfaces. For road riding the S is well worth paying the extra as it makes the bike much more practical and enjoyable day to day.
Would I be better off getting a low mileage used 1199s then Royal, as I cannot quite stretch to a 1299s. It will be mainly be used as a road bike with a couple of track days a year.
For a lot of track use i would say go for a base 1199/1299 and then upgrade the suspension, as i've been told that upgraded suspension on track works better than the electronic. If you are going to be doing a mainly road miles and a couple of track days here and there 1199s would be ideal.
So, now you need to start a what is the difference between 1199S and base 1299 thread! As others have said, 1299 base vs 1299S: Wheels. Active ohlins. Carbon front mudguard. +/- adjuster for on the fly adjustments in race mode. LED headlight Pillion seat cowl Differences 1199s to base 1299: As above +100cc. Wheelie control (I think that was introduced on the 1299, we'll... the 1199SL, but that doesn't count here!). Cornering ABS (again, I think this was new to the 1299). Wider fairings and different style tail/cowl. Different steering geometry and rear swingarm pivot moved.
Sort of. I think you would have to be very fast and know how to adjust suspension to each track for it to be a useful improvement on the electronic S suspension (which you can change to fixed settings if you want anyway). Plus, by the time you have bought decent upgraded suspension you are getting closer to an S price that has other extra goodies.
being in his position I went for the base and to be honest if your riding a 70 mile trip yes the suspension is a bit hard but as everyone says it can be sorted and softened with not to much cost.i could not afford the s but like any bike you get used to it and I cant say my arms are aching or back after a 70 mile ride on A and B roads anymore. your more likely to get annoyed with the low speed running as the bike does not like going through stationary/slow traffic as the engine hates low speeds its a pain. so I went for the base and its great for a blast but for low speed commuting it will never be tamed just like the s. its called character and it has bundles of that and when it comes to looks the revamped fairing is better than the older models.
Different engine characteristics, allegedly. 1199 has a power rush, whilst the 1299 delivery is supposed to be more linear.
The 1199 definitely has a rush, it's really pronounced, dare I say 2 stroke like... some love it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The 1199S doesn't have the event based suspension that the 1299S has, it just has electronically adjustable normal suspension so that's a difficult question to answer. Personally for a road bike I would probably go for the base 1299 and hope to upgrade the wheels and suspension when I had some cash. The 1199S can be pretty harsh as it's very race focused so you need to be the sort of person that likes to ride hard all the time to get the best out of it. The 1299 is a friendlier and more flexible bike.
The 1199 power comes in hard at high revs. The 1299 has a completely ridiculous low down spread of power as well as the high end rush, it's a mental bit of kit and doesn't really have any weaknesses on the road. For the track I prefer the lighter earlier 1199 engine hence going for the new R. If I wasn't able to have the R it would be a hard choice for me between the power of the 1299 and the lightness of the older 1199. The 1299, new R1, any BMW S1000RR,etc are definitely noticeably faster than the older 1199 but I still prefer it as it feels like a racebike whereas my S1000RR feels like a truck in comparison.
