Use a bicycle C spanner or a rear shock asborber C spanner.............I use either, depending on which one I pick up first. You will find you can easily open them up or close them a bit in a vice...........they will probably go out of 'flat' a bit, but whack it back in the vice to straighten it.
there are a couple of types of tool on ebay found a few were made of aluminium and had not great reviews but found one all steel construction that looked a lot better Ducati Steering Stem Triple Tree Nut Tool (all models) | eBay
Ah sorry c spanner is for the carby. You need a readily availble tool like the one pictured which has the pins on it. I got one for my ST. Works great
Ha ha, yes of course, I should have known. One day we should meet and compare your much improved ie with my much improved carby. When they are finished of course!
It isn't impossible to make your own tool for that top nut thingy.....(another silly nut invention by Ducati to stop owners doing work themselves, they think)........ You could make it from a large open end flat spanner and drill say, four holes in the right position and either tap them for an appropriate diameter hard bolt or screw........Or you could use hard nails of the right diameter, heat up the spanner and drive the nails thorugh the holes, then grind them off to the correct length (when it has cooled down)......
