Now, I'm no Roman Catholic - I'm not exactly what you would call religious at all - but this one got my interest... Who, exactly, does Donald Trump think he is ? Arguing with the pope about religion is, surely, madness? If Trump honestly believes what he says - that the Vatican is the "ultimate trophy" for ISIS, and that he could protect it - he really is living in his own weird world. America must be even more f**ked up than I thought it was if anyone is seriously considering electing this buffoon as president !
madness every where 4mill voted ukip. many are easy led mongs. 27% voted for tory cuts and the reduced rights that are coming. yip. madness everywhere taking on the pope in a relig off aint the brightest thing to do. or is it?
It's about time somebody stood up to all religions and exposed them for what they are. Anybody that believes in a prophet, an invisible man in the sky or a deity is a fool in this modern age. This in no way endorses Donald Trump by the way.
The Pope is just another nutter like Trump, it's just that his lot have been spouting shite a lot longer...
I'm an agnostic, not an atheist and I've got no strong feelings about Trump one way or the other. But I've not got much time for the Catholic church either. Trump says some silly things but as far as I'm aware he hasn't conspired to hush up the sexual abuse of children, he doesn't believe women should be condemned to die in childbirth to save the imaginary soul of an unborn child and he doesn't head a prohibition against contraception which has blocked emancipation for billions of women and contributed to catastrophic over-population in some of the most impoverished parts of the world. I don't think this Pope or any other is in any position to lecture other people on Christian values.
Preposterously self-important buffoon picks nonsensical religious quarrel with another absurdly egotistical buffoon. Good for a headline on a slow news day.
Good to see the Pope and Catholic Church building bridges with the gay community, divorcees, women that have had abortions, couples wanting contraception, anyone who masturbates and so on. Not defending Trump but the principle of building walls to keep unwanted intruders out is hardly new or radical is it & is it that different from locking your own front door to keep the neighbours out ?
No, but Trump would say any of those things today if he thought they would gain him some votes, or some headlines.
Well said. And just look at the 100,000's that are killed by different intolerant sects of their own religion. Hard to believe that we have not moved on in our development and thinking. Being tolerant of others shouldn't really be so hard :Banghead:
I disagree. I believe that ten times tens of thousands are killed by sects that are intolerant of others within their own broadly similar religous groupings. Our development and thinking hasn't moved on is something that I find hard to believe. I also think that being tolerant of others should be easier than it is. So you are completely wrong, Kirky. On all counts.
As recently as 50 years ago (and for centuries before) Europe was criss-crossed with a vast web of walls, fences, guard posts, minefields, etc together with huge armies of border guards, customs officials, and bureaucrats employed for the purpose of making life as difficult and inconvenient as possible for travellers. This apparatus cost billions, and was totally unproductive. Fortunately in recent times all this has been largely swept away, with vast savings for everyone. Unfortunately some people have not moved on in their thinking and yearn to regress to those times.
I must admit I am torn in two directions. On one hand so longs as churches keep on propounding patently nasty, absurd, unreasonable, malicious policies they will keep on losing popularity and adherents, which is obviously a good thing. So long may they continue. On the other hand churches still have a disproportionate influence over the political and legal scene, so that if they move to reasonable positions it becomes that much easier to achieve real social advances (such as equality legislation), which are also obviously a good thing. A bit of a dilemma to know what's for the best.
Because the issue of immigration is an on-off switch. You're either in favour of fully open but largely theoretical borders, or you want high walls & machine gun posts. If only it were possible to want something in between ...
Trump is a divisive character, so have a look at Richard Dawkin's view on it all. He rips into religion with intelligent reasoning and regularly leaves religious scholars looking very foolish. I'm with Richard.
whats right for one isnt necessary right for others. criticizing someone beliefs isnt the most tolerant past time is it? use your own brain. being a good sales man don't make you right.
Really??? Actually I think we are in agreement; maybe I didn't make my point clearly. "....killed by sects that are intolerant of others within their own broadly similar religious groupings" = Shias killing Sunni, Catholics killing Protestants, etc
I love Ricky Gervais's take on it. "I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in about 2,700 gods. Christians don't believe in 2,699 gods. So in percentage terms, Christians are almost as much atheists as I am"
