I jump in a cab 4-8 times per week, mix of black cabs/Uber/minicab... Uber drivers usually seem the most happy and like the flexible hours. I’m not defending their vetting approach (although the stats suggest that proportionaly you’re more likely to be assaulted by a black cab driver) or their apparent lack of data security. But I think the concept is brilliant, and in my experience, the service is great. I tend to use black cabs (in London) when the company is paying, and Uber when it’s coming out of my wallet.
I like uber. No one is forcing anyone to work for them or use them. If you don’t like it stick to grumpy overpaid black cabs or weird unreliable minicabs.
Best attitude there is. Suits me, so f*ck everyone else, especially those with the fewest choices in society. Well done
I know a good few private hire drivers, so use them personally whenever I need taxis. I know they aren't ripping me off, I know the money is going straight to the driver (and "some" tax being paid thereon). much prefer it to Uber and other tax dodging entities, but that is just my "thing" (whilst some may say taxi drivers dodge tax, they do try to minimise it, but are very much hamstrung by HMRC historical knowledge of what taxi drivers should be earning based on their patterns of spend, vehicle, fuel, etc. so to my knowledge they dodge tax far less than the likes of Uber are alleged/reported to do). Pete
The problem lies with TFL. The Uber/mini cab licenses outnumber the black cabs by 3 to 1. No way TFL are going to let that revenue stream disappear, but then at the same time, they control black cab fares. It cost me £17 for a 2 mile journey from Waterloo to Farringdon yesterday - what a joke!
Do Uber drivers have to go thru the same rigorous application to the council as private hire do for a plate? Anyone know? In the back of my mind, I have something that suggests they don’t. That Uber somehow managed to circumnavigate this process. But could be bbc reporting
Who in this situation are ‘those with the fewest choices in society’? Every uber I’ve used has been great. And every driver I’ve spoken to has been happy working with them.
According to my Cabbie yesterday, Uber and Mini Cabs are basically one and the same, so I would assume the processes are similar. I really don’t think it’s an issue of safety, it’s more of an issue of poor management from TFL. At the same time as granting tens of thousands of additional private hire licenses, they have added a number of highway style cycle lanes, basically causing perpetual gridlock. I’m not saying get rid of cycle lanes, but things have not been thought out in my opinion.
I am sure some of you have seen how Some Uber Taxi Drivers drive, I certainly would not get in one of them, I just hope there actually some good ones out there
The drivers. Those who have no other chances, other than zero hours delivery driving, uber, deliveroo, dole. No doubt some like the flexibility (did some work with Addison Less a while ago) but think most (like 90%) would take an employment stays, with g'teed hours, min pay, sick and holiday pay. I dont get any of those, but then I dont do a 10hr shift and get £65 in my pocket as a reward.
