Uk Text Charges

  1. In my naivety, I texted 'STOP' to some spam text that landed on my phone a while back. Can't remember what is was. now. but I think that the number was something like 7xxxx. When I looked at my bill, I realised that I was charged 50p for the privilege of texting 'STOP'. I was just listening to LBC and some PPI company advert was run. They suggest that you text some short code to find out if you are stupid and can claim PPI mis-selling.

Neither the advertiser, nor LBC, felt the need to warn you of the text charge. I am with EE and they don't list the charges for texting these, premium rate numbers. I got into a chat session and the best idea that the operator had was to call them and ask the cost - I assume that I would do this by texting the premium rate number to ask the charge...

As far as i can tell, premium rate texting is working for everybody: the advertiser, the phone company and the carrier (in this case, the radio station) with no regulation. The sucker who pays for this is the only one who may not be happy. But the bill payer is unimportant.

    What have I missed?
