I have a 1992 750ss. I have not ridden it much in the last 12 months but it was serviced in July last year. It does not live in a heated garage but it is dry. I tried to start it this week but without success. The engine turns over and the battery runs flat. I charged it over night and tried again the next morning. Some result - engine turns but there is no sign of it firing. Not even a cough. Is it likely to be the plugs are wet or the battery is week? Any hints or tips would be most welcome. Many thanks.
i am assuming that as its a 92 it is carbed ? if so i would of thought that they need draining to get rid of the water due to the ethanol in the fuel , or i could be talking bollox .
My RGV250 would have all jets clogged up if left for 2-3 months with fuel in the carbs. (some yellow/green is sludge) I would start with removing the spark plugs, clean the carburettors, pour in some fresh fuel in the tank...see how it goes. Next step if it won’t start try and hold the spark against the engine and see it there is spark. If yes then it would be fuelling related. Edited: OMG I nearly forgot, also check the air filter and surrounding area...mice/spiders like to nest in there.
Battery. It sounds from your description as though it is not holding much of a charge and typically, it will turn the engine over, but not produce a spark. Do you have access to another battery in better condition? Big V Twins make huge demands on the battery, if its not tip-top, you run the risk of knackering your sprag. If you have an old world car battery charger, put your battery on that for an hour and then try and start the bike. I'd advise trying this before getting into much else.
