Valve Clearance

Discussion in 'Vintage' started by Dukekook, Feb 3, 2018.

  1. Gday fellas. I've finally plucked up the courage to attempt the valve clearances on my '82 S2. I can't get it to idle unless I warm it up for ages, even in our warm summers! I was surprised that most of them were quite good and within spec with only 1 opener and 1 closer out (0.09mm) of spec.
I know that to have less than zero clearance and/or binding will damage the cam and rocker, but what I don't quite understand (forgive my ignorance) is that since the closers have a closing spring why is it so critical to have the closer clearance so precise? Di Giorgio recommends < 0.06mm, the one I have out of spec is 0.09mm, I wouldn't have thought a difference of 0.03mm would matter much especially with the help of a return spring. What effect would this have on the way the bike runs?
