Hi all My 95 m600 has developed a vibration that only seems to appear at 60mph or so in 5th gear, think I may have also noticed it at slower speeds in lower gears. Feel is noticeable mainly through the saddle and bars. Earlier in the year I rebuilt the carbs and later replaced the gear return spring. It rode fine after doing that. A few weeks ago I had the fork oils and seals replacement and front wheel balanced (by a recommended motorbike mechanic). The the vibration seems to have appeared after then. Before I take it back for them to look at, could it be something else? Have noticed a more petrolly smell recently too. Any thoughts gratefully received Cheers Danny
excluding things needing tightening generally and the petrol vapour/leak.. 60mph area would point me to the wheel balance if its a direct regular cut in at 60mph and smoothing out at speeds 70+. though this has been done apparently, perhaps the weight has fallen off?. alternatively wheel alignment possibly?.
maybe the front wheel out of alignment. undo the pinch bolts and bounce the front 6 or so times pushing hard through the bars. make sure its straight when upright obviously. then nip the pich bolts up and test ride. if you wanted to check it overproperly, drop the wheel off, grease the spindle and reassemble doing the above last.
Cheers for the replies guys. Can't see any sign of a missing balance (but would probably be hard to see any way). Remedial question now - how can I see if the wheels are aligned? Cheers
back wheel is shiwn on the chain adjusters. front wheel you cant see it but bouncing the suspension settles the wheel inline if done correctly and the spindle isnt stuck. to be honestit does sound more like a balancing issue. if you have lost a weight it should be obvious as they normally leqve a bit of glue or a clean mark on the rim so its worth having a look. ten second inspectiin job.
Chain adjusters are fine and I have tried your advice about front fork pinch bolts. Did have good look at wheels but couldn't see anything obvious, but there were some scuffs that looked suspect. It is due it's MOT v soon, so will get them rebalanced then. As always appreciate all your advice Cheers Danny
When it is vibrating look down the forks towards the wheel spindle. If the wheel is out of balance you will see the bottom of the forks vibrating. I don't know if it's possible to look down the forks from the riding position on a Monster and if you do don't take your eye off the road any longer than you have to for obvious reasons.
tbh the bit that catches me is you havent said youve "found" a new weight on the wheel. in my mind that would be the first thing to reply with after checking the wheel. in which case youre missing the new weight.. lol
Hi all The wheel weight issue will have to take a back seat for now. Got home tonight, went out an hour later to put bike away and looked at front forks. The right fork had black rubbery debris all down it, and there was a puddle of oil that had collected on the wheel rim. Will get that sorted and ask for balance to be done again. Cheers for all the input - hugely appreciated Danny
Now have my bike back - fork seals all ok and the front wheel was slightly out of balance. All put right and 60mph vibration has gone. Have had a few rides out and feels 100% better. Thanks again for the advice Safe riding Danny
