War Memorial Tour France/germany Gps File

Discussion in 'Touring' started by bradders, Feb 11, 2017.

  1. Anyone have one? My son and I will be doing some of them this year, I am a history luddite and every site I check kind of assumes so knowledge...so wondered if anyone had a gpx or whatever route I could use :)

  2. That sounds awesome. Visited my grandads war cemetery last year. He's just outside Munich. Also visited an internment camp while in Germany, very surreal.
I'm thinking of returning this year on the bike..

  3. I did the Normandy beaches tour last year and everything is easy enough to find @bradders We stayed in Deauville, which is a nice place with plenty of eateries. Everything is commutable to, and we spent 3 days riding, visiting many of the beaches, museums, war cemetaries and points of interest. You could spend a week quite easily in Normandy alone. Oh, and it's packed with Americans.

I also went to Ypres for the 2nd time last year, where the history is much more based around the 1st world war. The last post at The Menin Gate is emotional and something I would recommend everyone sees at least once.

Sorry, no gpx file. But the 1st picture shows our planning. :)

  4. Fantastic mate..... Looks like a great trip. Went to the Australian war museum in Canberra a few years back, focusses heavily on "The Great War" very humbling. Been to Siam to Burma railway, also very stirring

  5. I've started doing research for similar a while back. I started looking at some of the battlefield tour companies for their itineraries as a guide to perhaps some key areas/order to do things in.

Not much help but be really interested in what you do. I've done Normandy but I'm guessing your doing/aiming more central/northern France?

  6. Once I have pulled it together I'll share it :)

Have also checked the tours but (understandably) they are a bit vague on some details. Also be good to know timings. Son really wants to do some of the German camps, he missed a school trip.

  8. Eldest brother & four mates just came back from a motorbike tour of the ww2 french coast.

  9. Which direction do you want @bradders, I have a few routes for WW2 beaches/key locations along Normandy and WW1 trenchlines

  10. Thanks for sharing your pics- I did the full Normandy trip about 14/15 years ago and looking at your photos we must have stood in the exact same areas. We did it in a Triumph Stag in hot summer - miracle we made it home without cooking it?
