Hi all I'm trying to get my M600 running properly, so far I have fixed a fuel starvation issue and the bike starts, but as soon as any load is put on the bike it seems to run on 1.5 cylinders. I've traced this to a weak spark on the top cylinder, which means that plug is just not firing. I've switched the plugs but still no spark. I'm going to have to coils off today and clean up the connections. The bike was dropped at low speed which has apparently caused a lot of the issues. I'm hoping to have the bike running soon, so I can do up my commuter.
could be so many things but depending on mileage might be front or rear exhaust opener closed down as this is first thing that happens if servicing neglected*. If you feel certain that it's ignition then obviously track that down to a conclusion first. If you get a repeated weak spark then you can swap over the coil and the CDI methodically to see if the weak spark goes to the other cylinder. The pick-ups inside the engine can partially fail (plus the leds can short/breakdown) but tend to show up more when engine is hot. *something that a compression test would reveal normally.
Thanks Chris The bike was running before it went over on Saturday, so Is suspect something has come loose in the impact. The bike looks to be in good condition and has never been out in the rain. I will try and swap the CDI and coil around a bit and see what happens. The bike will go for a full service once it starts and runs, just to make sure. I'm not sure if the rev counter worked to start with but this may be ignition related. I'll chase up the connections for this later on. Does the feed come off one of the coils? Luckily my '94 bike (tatty though it is) does work fully so I can do some swapping around today whilst off work.
Wot Chris says, HT lead to coil connections are always suspect as are plug caps. The fact that your rev counter isn't working (which I think are electronic on your bike) suggests an ignition circuit / connection problem rather than fuel or mechanical, because they are powered from the ignition circuit. (unless it was bust in the first place) AL
yes, the tacho piggybacks the wires into the R/H CDI(igniter) from standard I think - it could be that something is shorting in that area. Due to just coming through the winter/damp it's worth cleaning (or spraying with contact cleaner - but use sparingly as it can damage some plastics) all those ignition related spade connectors anyway as it can help the overall spark quality. Hard to say what might have changed as a result of dropping - I know when it's happened to me carbs and idle can be a bit strange for a while as a result of flooding but it usually settles down. Is your fuel pump diaphragm vacuum hose ok btw? - sometimes perish at ends and get overlooked. sorry Al ^ overlapped
Thanks for the help Chris. I went to swap the Coils and CDI over only to find that the right hand coil was minus one of the spades. Reconnected it and all is good. I just need to make a new tank strap, work out why the bike only ran on one after a quick blat out (felt like carb icing), give it a test run then I can MOT it and begin modding.
