Wee Cafe Racer Project

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Rodent, Sep 25, 2017.

  1. Hi Guys, thought I'd share my wee 620 sport project based on a 2003 620SSie, it has 4000 miles on it so apart from a bit of corrosion from salt and a damp Aberdeenshire first owner its been pretty easy to get up to scratch. Engine was a nightmare with usual Ducati worst engine lacquer in the world coating falling off! I must have spent 6/7 hours on this alone apart from re-powder coating the engine covers.Ducati Glasgow have been really helpful in providing me the little bits to get the new look back again and are not as expensive as you would think. Any bit that were expensive or not available were replated like the throttle linkages. So here are a couple of pics for you to see.

  4. The bike is still in the making but I was struggling to upload more pics, it looks almost finished but I'm in that stage of the build that takes ages!
    Will post more today.

  5. I've been in that stage for 3 years :)

  7. Cracking looks and balance :):upyeah:

  8. Very nice that :upyeah: Seat stitching and paint look spot on.

  9. Love it! Very nice indeed

  10. I honestly love the cafe racer "look" (or most of them) but can someone tell a relative know nothing like me why they often re-route the pipe to right under the seat. Are there gains to be made from doing this or just a severely blistered arse?
Cafe Racer on FB has some fantastic pics/builds (lots of hondas though if thats not your thing).

  11. great work btw wish i had half your talent :upyeah:

  12. While not a fan of cafe racers - i can appreciate good quality work. what did you coat the engine in? as soon as theres a reason for the motor to come out of my hyper itll be getting stripped and recoated....the main crank cases on mine seem, to be holding up but the front barrel is shit...

Having said that, that looks really nice. As exige said - it looks evenly balanced, chunky, in a good way. More pics...

  13. Hi guys, thanks for all the compliments. The engine was a real pain to deal with as the only way to nail it is to strip the engine and get a special coating done so I did the same the rest of us which was to remove as much of the old laquer and remove every single rubber bung from the fins rub down repeat rub down etc etc!!!!
Halfords silver engine aerosol then fuel resistant laquer to finish. Replace all the rubbers and it’s looking pretty nice now.
The casings were powder coated after removing seals and bearings. Every visible nut and bolt has been replaced or replated.
Exhausts won’t be under seat as it won’t suit this interpretation but they will be well out the way. Under seat pipes can look good but it’s a lot of effort to move more weight higher up unless you go titanium. Plus I couldn’t get my feet fully on the deck on the std seat so I didn’t want the seat any higher!
I know what you’re saying about clip ins but I’ve left them above the yokes and the seat is 3” lower than std, it may only get ridden round the block if it’s that bad!
Just spent 2 hours cleaning and making sure every piston is perfect on one of the brake caliper just one to go now.

  14. Admire and wish I had your skill that's the dogs both on restoration and aesthetically

You mind me asking where the seat unit and especially the seat came from @Rodent because it looks fekin gorgeous & I'm drooling (at ma age though that's not uncommon)

  15. Hi John
Seat and tank came from Belgium a company called barn built bikes they use JVS for the seat upholstery they have done customer bikes almost the same as mine but I wanted to do the majority myself. They also did the frame alterations.

  16. As a two stroke man I have limited experience with these diesels but when I rode it before the strip down it didn't carburete very well, can these ecu's be altered or what is normal to get them running better? Just looking drivability and not performance as I have other stuff to take care of that need!

  17. looks superb so far . Keep the pics and updates coming!

  18. Is that ie motor? Theres not many guys playing with fag packet ecu (15M?), try Mark at BSD Peterborough. PC3 and dyno probably easiest route.
