Weeve problem

  1. Please help... My beloved 796 has developed a weeve at speed... Standard fit has no damper fitted to it... But at motorway speeds the handle bars shake and as time goes by it seems to be getting worse! The tyres are 1000 mile old pilot 3 and are not squared off, have tried changing tyre pressures with no change at all, nothing appears loose at all either.. ?

  2. Handlebars shake, or is it a real tank slapper?

A weave wouldn't really have handlebar shake..........but the bike would be shimmying at speed.......

For what I would recognise as handlebar shake, I would look at the front wheel bearings.

A weave, I would look at the headstock bearings..........possibly got too tight through lack of maintenace / grease.

  5. It's not a tank slapper .. At speed in a straight line and upright it develops a front wheel wobble which increases with speed.. Bike then feels very unstable... Only way out of seems to be to throttle off...

  6. Have you checked that your wheel weights (used to balance afte tyre fitment) haven't come off?

sounds stupid but they're only sticky back adhesive and recently some of my mates came off at a track day and that did a similar thing, we had to find them and then we used black duck tape to cover them over with and keep them in place.

might be worth just popping teh wheel off and nip to your local tyre fitter, he'll know within seconds if its balanced and if not it'll costs you about £10 to get sorted if that

  7. Thanks for that . I did glance at the balance weights the other day but I will go and have a proper look later...

  8. Get the front wheel off the ground and check the forks are smooth side to side, and check the headstock for play.....Bearings too loose or too tight can cause what you describe............its the forewarning of a tankslapper.
