1200 Weird Mpg - Temperature Related ?

  1. Hi all,
as the title says, I got some funny shit going on over the long weekend. Sorry for the lengthy rambling, but hopefully someone will read it and have some ideas :)

Bike went in for its 1st service a week ago. until then its been returning ~40mpg. It usually means fuel light on around 125 to 135, filling up at about 130 to 140 miles, and with the indicated range left would give 170 total.
This pretty much matches my previous multi.

We were off to Germany for a long weekend on Friday. To start with on the way to Germany, still getting 40mpg.
Mid day Saturday we fill up with 95 (not super or E11). The bike then gives shite range, to the extent that I did 105 miles before the fuel light came on, and filled up within a mile or two, putting in 16 litres. This was only 30mpg !!
I was with 3 other multis and theirs all used the same as before (they put in roughly 12 litres).

My bike continued to drink gas at this rate over the next couple of days and fill ups. It improved to 35mpg when I put 98 in, but not for long.
The bike didn't return to anything like 40mpg until we were heading for home again.
It was so bad you could smell the unburnt fuel in the air.

One of my mates says his uses more when its cold, and the air temp according to the bike was 11 degrees on Sunday, whereas it was a bit warmer Monday, and 18 degrees Tuesday on the way back.

Mods wise, the bike has a Quad D system (cat replaced) and a DUC-EE (exhaust valve eliminater) fitted.

There seems little point in asking the dealer as they shouldn't have changed anything other than filter and oil, plus reset the service light. There is i suppose a chance they did a software update.
The fact its gone back to roughly the same also means they probably couldn't reproduce it at present.
If it is temp related then it sounds to me like the engine map is rubbish, or I possibly have a bad sensor.

So. any of you guys seeing major fuel usage when its cold ?
If so, are you standard pipe with cat, or modded ?

I'm trying to determine if I need to book a tanker for my next trip to follow me around :/

    Cheers all.
ps, yes we were riding at 'continental' pace, but so were the others, and they used nothing like my bike was.

  2. Been here - the bike would return sh*t mileage until the air temperature was up in the 20s.

Warranty put in a New ECU, repeated checks on the diagnostics etc but never sorted it. Took it to CJS to be remapped - problem solved.

  3. All injection engines will return higher fuel consumption with lower temperatures but not that much different.
I was also in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany last Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun and my bike did slightly better mpg than it's been doing here. Temperatures were about the same as home, 10º on Thursday and 14º - 15º on Sun, I live in NE Scotland. Consumption was 45mpg at home, 50mpg for the trip, mainly due to long distances at fairly constant speeds. The bike has a full Termi system and ECU.
Importantly, your consumption went from bad to much worse. Was the temperature display on the dash showing normal readings? Mine is usually around 67º-70º at a touring speeds out of towns/cities.
I'd suspect a faulty coolant temperature sensor. They appear to be the same as fitted to most other Ducatis and are notoriously unreliable.

  4. Hi Derek,
I was fortunate that I had othermts12s with me, so did temperature and fuel comparisons.
Mine was showing ~64degrees most of the time, which was similar to the others.

I and a few of the others were two up, so it always drops the mpg a bit. We see 38 to 42 whilst the solos see 44 to 46mpg.
I never saw anything like this low omy old bike, even when in seriously cold temps.

I agree that it sounds like a sensor issue, just not sure which one.
I did wonder if blocking part of the rad might help, but a mate said he had tried this with no effect, so didn't try it myself.

Doodle, thanks for the info. I am trying to avoid a rmap if I can, as it's still nearly new (~2k miles)

  5. Try swapping the air temperature sensor with one of your Multi mates John........quick and easy to do to prove it's at fault or eliminate it.

Edit - TPS, another possible suspect?

  6. John, it seems we might have crossed paths in Vianden in Luxembourg last week. Pity I missed you.

  7. EMM Derek?...........how's about a report and some photos for the folks here ;-)

  8. Not the EMM Andy, the Multistrada.net Belgium Bash. I spent too much time riding to take many photos and I hate writing up reports of events. :Sour: If I'm at a loose end I might find a few words or you can have a look here

  9. Of course, I knew that! ............I'll maybe drop a few of the other guys an email and see if someone can be persuaded to post here. Thnx

  10. whilst in belgium last week john i was getting about 2 euro a tank better than one of the lads on a 2010 multi id say i was very pleased with the fuel economy and indeed included some nice blasts along the way , didn't really notice much difference even on saturday when temps were cold about 8 degrees

  11. Hi Derek,
yeah chances are you were sat at one of the tables and I didn't know. Carole spoke to us, and I saw Peter (Coman I think).

Dave, one of my mates was also getting better than usual. I think he was nicking my fuel on the move ;)

  12. I was sat at the same table as Peter.
