1198 What Battery ?

  1. Hi, my bike needs a new battery as the original is on its way out. What battery do i go for? I've had a small look on the net and not really interested in a light-weight one which will save me 2kg and cost over 150+ and i know this is a stupid question but is there any steps i need to take while replacing it? or is it just a straight swap?

    Thanks

  2. Changed mine on the 1098 and was advised to get one with a higher cranking current than standard to allow for the extra resistance of the large twins (sorry, was a while ago and can't remember the make) - was about £50 from a local bike shop.

Nothing special to do when changing (as long as the same as my 1098), just remove the old one and refit the +/- terminals to the new one - clearly, do this with the ignition off and make sure the positive lead does not make contact with any earth point on the bike.

  3. Hi i went to my local battery wholesale place (Multicell) the guys were great i brought a Gel high crank amps i think from memory 20amps ? the battery fitted my 1198 perfect, was about half the weight of my old one and cost £38. plus VAT try shopping local you may save some money

  4. Have a look here www.mdsbattery.co.uk . Found them really good service and competitive pricing when I needed a battery last year.

  5. Thanks guys! Now when replacing it do I have to keep power or is it ok to disconnect the battery completely? I won't lose any info will I?

  6. Disconnect. You'll have to reset the clock. If you have an 1198S you will need to switch the DTC back on and set the level.

  7. I have nemesis tc but that over rides the dtc so will it just come on or will have to set it up again?

  8. No. I have the same set up as you on my 1098R. I've just changed the battery too for a lithium ion lightweight jobbie. So far so good, I was a bit sceptical with the light battery but its been spot on. So light it feels totally wrong but turns over no problem. Get one.

  9. Yes I ended up changing it for another oem battery, managed to get one from my local auto spares shop for £20 which was a real bargain :D swap was easy and took less than 5 min. No need to reset anything just the clock! It's now great so when this one packs in I'll replace for light weight lithium one. But if I was to replace it again would i have to change my trickle charger as battery is lithium ?

  10. Remember to get a proper charger, one that can balance charge the cells is best (they are made up of a number of cells in parallel which are then put together in series). Sometimes the individual banks get out of whack, so each set needs to be balanced individually.

They like to be stored at 60-80% of charge, this is not voltage the relationship of charge to voltage is non linear.

Don't let them drop below minimum charge volts if they do you have a far higher chance of having a goosed battery, they are not as forgiving as lead acid technology

Don't use a charger that has a de-sulphation cycle on it (or if you do switch that cycle off), or you'll kill them.

After all that my experience with LiFe batteries has been fine, no probs, just a heads up from what I've learned

  11. How has this worked out Chris, any trouble? Is it higher spec than the one that comes with the bike? Thanks

  12. Worked out fine. Equivalent spec.

  13. I fitted the same battery to my 848 a couple of months ago, not to save weight, but to explore the technology. I never keep bikes on battery chargers in the garage, but even after a month sitting the bike starts absolutely fine.
Next time I change the battery on the ST2 it will be getting the same Lithium one.

  14. Just a note to others not overly confident when working on there bike, it is good practice when removing the battery to disconnect the - neutral first and replace it last, this avoids shorting the battery to earth with a spanner if you try removing the + positive first.
