What Car To Buy , Advice Required ?

  1. Looking for bit of advice on car buying unfortunately. Moving back to UK soon, and have no choice but to run a car.
Was thinking about a 3 year old BMW 3 series touring , as need bit of space / practicality. Or something of similar size. Anyone have experience in running costs for a Beamer ? Or similar for your suggested marque ?
When I'm looking would petrol or diesel be best bet , as I heard government non too happy about diesel for future ?
    Thanks in advance

  2. Morning, some years back I ran a 335D for a couple of years, stunning engine, real world fast, 40mpg give or take, very reasonable service costs, not the roomiest car though, maybe a 5 series would do better? I think diesel will be OK for a few years yet, so just depends how long you wanna keep it for?

  3. Having been a Merc man for many years, when the last one died I bought a Seat Leon ST FR and have been absolutely delighted. Major service £240 ! As good as qualty wise and phenominal performance marrying the Golf 2.0l turbo Euro5 diesel with the Audi DSG auto box. Andy

  9. Not all insurance companies will accept your overseas no claims bonus (a few might) so check

Despite being over 50 (not by much) many car companies here would not accept my bike insurance no claims as car no claims, so for car insurance they are showing me as no claims. Some of the prices are a joke.

    2004 mazda rx8 at £1,500, value tpft £997
    2004 ford cmax 2.0 diesel value £1,000, tpft £807
2004 ford explorer 4 litre value £1,000 fully comp £323

it's also worth checking the car road taxes, a 2002 subaru legacy 3.0r came back at £520 a year

I had a car the other day lined up for £350 but by the time the insurance and tax came in, the whole package would be around £1,500

so check insurance and car tax before you buy

  10. Fuck me Noobs , premiums round your way are scandalous !!! :(

  11. I used a comparison site and some direct ones. I work from home, ticked the box that I would not be using it for work, I would not be driving at peak times and doing less than 6,000 miles a year but still no cigar, very peculiar

  12. My Exige is less than £200 fully comp on limited mileage, similar age to Noobs - value £35K :) New Vivaro is about £300 with no mileage limits.

  13. Thats more like it @Exige , must be the Essex thing then, unless Noobers is about 19 years old ??

My Multibike policy is about 270 quid(dearest bike being Multistrada)
The new Golf Gti we just bought is 200 quid
My own car is 650 quid but that is one of the higher groups

So Essex rates suck !!! :(

  14. I think it's more the first year with no claims, I thought my old age would make it resonable and I suspect the second year would see a dramatic drop in price that's why I thought Hypermac should be aware if he might be in the same situation?

I think hyper on the buying of one on the issues you raised, diesel is still fine for a while unless you are expecting to run through London for a while then I would avoid diesel.

  17. A Euro 6 diesel should be ok.
My 2013 Euro 6 320d Touring is very cheap to run and is probably as roomy as an older 5 series as cars tend to get bigger with every model change.
At 37000 miles it hasn't worn out any tyres yet, it sips fuel at 52.8 mpg over its life and needs little servicing.
    It's also capable of 140 mph and 7.9 0-60.
    What's not to like ??

  18. Funny how they wont accept bike insurance no claims for your car insurance yet are only too willing to accept any car issues (speeding etc) to levy against your bike insurance.
