I need something more lightweight to use instead of my laptop when I go away soon. The place I am visiting has Wi-Fi for me to use. Is it a Tablet I need to enable me to surf and read emails?I am old and not very technical so would something like a Kindle Fire or Nexus be suitable?Something as expensive as an I Pad would be completely wasted on me. Any suggestions very much appreciated from those of you who have used these things.
The kindle fire is much more user friendly to operate and set up than any of the android tablets......even though it is built on the android os. With this in mind......I'd go kindle fire if I were you. I use the ipad and also have a Samsung tab2 and the daughters fire HD is by far the most user friendly. It's designed for people who don't need to know how it works they just know it works.
I have an iPad and love it. My wife who is an anti-geek has a Kindle Fire HD and loves that too. Set up was easy and she downloads books, eMails and internets like a true nerd  My only complaint re the Kindle is that I find it very slow to operate compared to the speed of my iPad.
It depends on how large you want the screen. We bought two Samsung Galaxy Tab2 7" for the kids for Xmas. They are aged 4 and 13 and both get on well with theirs. The Nexus 7" does have slightly better specs but at the time the 50 quid price difference just didn't stack up, although the price deal on the Samsung's seeks to have ended, so if I were spending on a 7" right now I would go for the Nexus. I also bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10" for my wife and can honestly say it is a superb bit if kit. Really well made, lovely screen, great erformsmce, and less than half the price of an iPad. Do you use a smartphone? If you already have ios or android then it sort of makes sense to stick with that ecosystem as your apps will be useable.
I have a nexus 7 and my Missus has an iPad. I much prefer the nexus for browsing but if you want apps and magazines, an iPad is better! I can only get superbike mag on the android tablet but I could get a lot more choice on the iPad. Apps on the iPad are better too. Visordown app has been crashing on opening for a month now. It's also much easier to watch movies on an android tablet If you haven't bought in to the iTunes Eco system (which we have )
