Once upon a time, many years ago my cush drives ate my eccentric hub and a bit of my swingarm. Looked on ebay and someone was selling a whole rear end, 5 spoke marchesini, swingarm, hub, rear shock/spring and associated pivoty bits for the suspension. Swapped the hub and the arm over and all was well. My current rear tyre is now (as of yesterday) down to showing cords so time for a new tyre. To tide me over to payday I thought I'd just put the other wheel on as it has a pretty much brand new tyre on it! It might be a Pilot and not match my Diablo on the front but I'll take that chance! Took the old wheel nut off with remarkable, almost shocking ease and it came off in the 3 pieces, nut, shim, spacer as expected. Took the old wheel off its spindle and the nut is an all in one anodized affair. I can see why an all in one jobber would be nice for a track bike as its what the wheel came from, but from a safety/protection of parts perspective would the 3 part nut assembly be better? Or is it just down to owner opinion? Many thanks.
I've had both over the years. So long as it's torqued up and the safety clip is in i never had an issue with either. Even though my one piece item was all titanium i found the ally cone and a ti nut to be a bit lighter so am sticking with that for now. I also put a little cable tie through the safety clip too for extra peace of mind. Yeah i'm guessing the one piece cone is rotating on the wheel where a split item wont, but so long as your not changing wheels every weekend and keep it all clean you shouldn't have an issue.
Yea didnt have a cable tie small enough so will be popping up to a garage in the morning to scrounge one. Should probably have gone to the local service's and put some pressure in the tyre before putting it on but hindsight is a wonderful thing! Will keep an eye on it. Thanks for the info.
