748 Where Is The Redline/rev Limiter?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Rjkc600, Sep 17, 2015.

  1. at what point does the 748 hit a rev limiter?

I've hit 12000rpm and still feels like it's pulling strong, although I usually change up at 11k.

    Any clues?

  2. limit is 15,000... keep going you'll be fine...:D no dont you wont be.. mine cuts at 11,500.. standard bp with termis and correct chip (i believe)

  3. Interesting. Mine didn't cut at 12k and still felt like it was pulling strong.

Running 50mm termi's and a chip of some variety. :-D

  4. Careful....what chipmand how adjusted? Some have lifted the limiter, and I know of the occasional case where it was forgotten...til it went boom! 11500 sounds about right

  5. 11,500 feels about right too... dont think there is any more go after that on a standard donk

  6. How can I tell what chip it is?

It's all been setup recently in a service.

I don't visit 12k often, but was surprised that I could and that it still felt strong.

Reliable source, I wouldnt rev to 12k

  8. Check out graphs online and a couple seems to show it revving a tad over 12k but most 11500

  9. not sure with the chip thing but perhaps @chrisw could tell ya? maybe also the gearing might play a part in how high its revving/pulling power but mine on standard gearing certainly has nothing more in the lower gears after about 9.5 -10 ish as in it just make more noise in 1st and 2nd but it does like being maxed out further up

  10. Check the sigma site, Spalding says its 11500.

Been a while, cant remember the name (think @nelly may still have the software??) but you could shange the parameters incl lift the limiter. Few of the race bikes had a higher limit as the internals were better and they were serviced more regularly.

I'd have said ask @Peroni but he's been banned :Meh:

  11. I'm also running a carbon Airbox and performance filter, but doubt that'd give it more top end to need a raised limiter?

    I'll stick to 11k max.

  12. 11.5 you'll be ok! :upyeah:

  13. Reading the spalding article, he reckons the redline (thats what he describes, not limiter) is close to the limit of where you would want to rev a 4v and maintain reliability

  14. There were EPROMs around with raised limiters. I had the same software as Sigma but not the ability to burn fresh chips. Neil did a couple for me, as did a few others that I tried in my 748/853.
I ran a 13k in that but it was a very strong bottom end. I had one EPROM with no limiter........
I wouldn't run much past 11500 too often on a stock bottom end tbh.

  15. I'm sure it was Dallas that had the 996rs build, forgot there was no limiter and wrecked it within a few miles of a 5k build...ouch!

  16. Mine has a custom chip as it is a 748R engine in a 748S frame, setup by CJS and it is set to just a fraction under 12,000.

It's best not to rev it too hard or too often especially if you have a stock bottom end, I'd agree as above 11,500 but not (too) regularly.

  17. The above eprom is for the model below according to Ducati.

    965028AAA (08054/17) - 748 Biposto silencers Ø 50

    The others are:-

    965014AAA (08054/6) - 748 Twin-seat silencers Racing
    965036AAA (08054/7) - 748 Biposto complete assembly Ø 50

  18. You posted that at 7:48AM. Well timed!

Cheers for all the help guys. For now I'll stick to 11000 as I don't fancy knackering my engine anytime soon.

  19. 748 does really well to 8500 and then you can go on for moons to find the last bit ie 6hp 3k later isnt the wisest idea agreed.
