White Milky Creamy Sludge In Crank Case Breather

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cream_Revenge, Oct 28, 2016.

  1. Hey

Similar to what I assume Monster riders get in their sight glass.

Found some today when removed breather tube, not lots, and probably never checked before. If I look down into it I can see some.

    Is this normal behaviour?

Bit of condensation in the pipe too, i assume this is normal after a 150mile ride + a day on track?

    TIA

  2. I'm assuming you mean something like a crankcase breather to airbox?

Have you lost water out of your expansion tank, did it run hot?... no, probably ok.

Sounds like warm oil mist mixed mixed with damp air, emulsified oil....oil jelly.
Was it in a vertical tube or some sort of trap like place. Not familiar with that bike.

Personally, I'd just clean it and keep an eye on the water level, perhaps the oil too.
I doubt it's breathing a lot, It's not smoky is it...

If you make a note of the water level on a level surface then check it again at intervals.. everyone should be a winner.

If you find you keep topping the water up and the oil level starts to go up... not so good but I am sure you'd have notice anything like that on your track day.

If you want to be OCD mark the floor where you check the bike and check it in same place each time..

I bet it's formed over longer period than a 150 miles...

The other issue (milky) oil in the crankcase site glass thing is not all that unusual, if a bike sits in a cold gauge, condensation, due point, sweating and all that kind of non sense....

I use to get in my race car that had a wet sump due to being stored over winter in a concrete garage. We use to have it with industrial machines on certain sites, because they did not run long enough to get warm and they had no water cooling at all.. Had to run them up good and hot before changing the oil.

Sorry don't mean to confuse, too much info in my little brain.

  3. Oil level is fine. And still the lovely Motul colour. Coolant level looks fine.

I think you'll have the same breather on your 998, behind the vertical cylinder. Great big black thing with a big black pipe coming out, i believe it routes to the airbox eventually.

As I say, i bet it's never even been off before.

I'm going to monitor and not worry to much......:Bag:

  4. Much harder to diagnose issues on line without the bike to look at so can't be 100%.

If it was me I would not worry if it is what is sounds like. Unless the water level drops, or it starts running crap or smoking etc... but there are several reasons for these things as I am sure you are aware.

I'd just keep an eye on my temp gauge but I always do.
