Who's been to Brno?

  1. Off to Brno on thursday for the motogp, but never been to the Czech Republic. Has anyone been, and can you recommend any sightseeing, bars, clubs, etc? We'll be in Prague on friday, then riding down to Brno for 2 days there.

  2. Went to Prague a couple of years ago and wouldn't rush back, lots of dodgy geezers in big coats apparently watching their pickpocket mates. Also scammers trying to get you to change money with them rather than the official bureau, offering better rates, then if you do the deal another comes along posing as the law and takes your money away! Plenty of decent bars though but just make sure your money is well hidden.

  3. Been there for WSB a couple of times, Pegus Pub is a great Bar. In centre of old town behind main square. It has its own brewery and does traditional food platter stylee. Lots of Alfresco bars/cafes on the main drag off the main square. Track is great viewing, we watched qually on pit straight and see the pit crews in action and a great place for race is in midfield(tunnel at pitstraight) to inbetween esses on a hill with big screens in front.
We had a few days in Prague too, totally different feel to Brno. Prague is very beautiful but a bit tacky/touristy. Brno's a lot smaller and quieter but mabe not at MGP weekend.

  4. Excellent! My next question was going to be about viewing at the track, but you've saved me the effort, thanks.

  5. Figaro I'll check if my mates from Ducati PL are going, they usually meet with Czech local Ducati blokes however it is heavy time as they drink and smoke weed most of the day!!

  6. I'll forego the weed, but if they want a drink I'm up for it.

  7. Been to Prague quite a few times and really like the place ....lovely architecture and sights but it does get rammed full of tourists, and like anywhere there are scammers and pickpockets so you do need to be on your guard. If you're going to spend any time in Prague you'll do a lot of walking. If you get chance have a look inside the restaurant at Obecni Dum aka the Municipal House opp to Namesti Republiky ....well worth looking at interior...beautiful chandeliers mirrors and wall paintings. There is also a little tourist 'train' that runs from the main square and does a city tour which is a good way to see things...takes you up to the castle.

For food in Prague you can eat whatever you want but if you fancy sampling Czech food try Restaurace U seminaristy VÍTEJTE which is about a 5 min walk from Tesco.

Brno is (or was) about half the price of Prague. As mentioned Hotel Pegas does great food and brews beer too. I stayed there when I went to the GP a few years ago, although I didn't spend any other time in Brno it looked nice from what I saw of it. Certainly Brno was pretty loud with revellers of various nationalities all through the night...sleep wasn't that easy.

I'd bought a couple of grandstand tickets on the start line as it was so cheap compared to the British GP. Like all start/finish grandstands, there are possibly better places to watch from but you get the build up, noise and podium stuff, plus big screen.

Interesting ride back from Brno towards Prague as all the locals line the motorway and bridges to watch the bikes.

  8. With both my brother and I being air conditioning engineers, finding time in the summer is not easy, so we have 7 days max to take in a biking holiday. And at my age I've no desire to pump out high mileages any more (we did Chemnitz in a day 5 years ago, and it was too far to be enjoyable). So we'll be doing the journey in short hops. Bonn, Prague, Brno for 2 days, Nuremberg, then hopefully a couple of laps of the Nurburgring before coming home.

So the best we're gonna manage at each place is a quick walk round the town before finding a restaurant/bar...Let's face it, just the bar... But if we enjoy the Czech Republic we may go back for a xmas piss-up. I could happily give Prague a miss (I went there 30 years ago and it was a fabulous place before the stag/hen scene arrived), but my brother wants to go there, so we're going.

To be honest it wouldn't bother me to miss the Nurburgring either, I've been there the last three years. So if anyone can think of a place worth visiting for a day, somewhere midway between Nuremberg and Calais, I'd appreciate your input:upyeah:

  9. If you're looking for a Xmas piss up, and to take in a bit of culture, I would recommend Budapest. Been twice now and reckon we could get another week there to see everything we've so far missed! Some very good restaurants and bars and it's pretty cheap too. Good public transport to take you around. If you want anymore info pm me and will give you my phone number. Chris

  10. Done it. And Sofia, and Krakow. Three times:biggrin:

Budapest was alright, but like Prague it's getting a bit dodgy if you don't know the area. I don't need that at my age, just want somewhere cheap and inviting to go for a few jars. Krakow has been perfect for that. Time for a new venue, though.

  11. LeMans. Don't miss the old city behind Cathedral. Main town is geared for petroheads, engines and regalia Restaurants etc. Museum at track is good.

  12. Always rains at Le Mans:frown:

  13. Gdansk, we are nicer there and not as concerned with past/religion. :) Stay away from Warsaw except people from Warsaw no one likes people from Warsaw ;)

  14. My polish mate keeps saying Gdansk. We'll definitely go there at some point.

  15. Ok have you tried Bratislava? Another nice and small city, good food and beer, particularly cracking hot chocolate shop with, I think, 70 odd ways to have a nice hot choc with Whiskey, Rum,Vodka etc. Also took a jet boat trip up to Vienna for the day!

  16. No I haven't. I'll certainly look into it.

  17. Just found another good reason to go to Budapest!! They've just opened a Hooters!!!

  18. Ain't that the truth :frown:

  19. You've got all the "hooters" you need at home dear boy

  20. Can't argue with that point, but if it's anything like the Hooters I visited in Orlando it will have great food, good beer and Jack Daniels, superb sport on the multiple tv's and incredibly friendly service! Yes the girls are scantily clad, but nothing is on display, but the girls in Florida were just really good at their job, and we were made to feel particularly welcome, and that takes some doing in a city that's based on tourism. If anyone is going to Orlando I suggest you give them a visit.
