Windows 10 ???

  1. Been offered a free upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10, should I do it? Or is it crap (Or crappier than Win's 8?) Remember I'm a computer numpty/Luddite type.

  2. Is it a beta or a full release? If it's a full release some times it's better to wait until all the bugs have been ironed out a la windows 8. I use 8.1 and I find it good for what I use it for, which is a lot. Only had a few problems in the two years I have used it and it's good at self repair.

If it's beta I personally would not bother.

  3. Not beta apparently.

  4. I've been doing a bit of reading on it. Depends what system you have now and what you use the computer for.

I thought about it and a lot are going to load and try it on a dual boot. If your a Luddite like me 2 then that's way too much trouble.

If your running win8 then what I've been reading you should go for it as its a definite improvement.

If Win7 then it becomes a bit more subjective. I'm running Win7 64bit and as I've got all me games, photography and video software set up the way I like it. So personally I'm not going to fix what isn't broken (but could well be if I allow a new operating system in).

Win7 is going to be supported until 2020 so I just don't see the urgency, especially as I'm not much of cross platform user (phones, tablets etc).

My missus is still running XP and I occasionally have to do tasks on her machine and I still think XP is a great system, my point is that OS's (IMHO) have now reached the point where the next generation is not the massive leap it once used to be.

If you are a gamer too then it may be worth considering if the games you play are popular as its getting directX active 12 (I think) which earlier systems don't support. As I'm mainly into flight simms and they are about 2 to 3 levels below this at the moment I don't need it.

I've also read that the offer will be open for a while despite the hype that Microsoft are pedaling that if you don't get it now then you'll need to pay for it.

  5. Yup full release, and depending on what you have now will govern which version of the OS you get

  6. I've just managed to locate my system I.D., it's not Windows 8, but Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, so maybe just keep this? Ideas @Old Jock ?

  7. Hi Dave

You'll get Windows 10 Home edition the lower of the 2 versions of Win 10. I've got Win7 64bit pro that would get me the Win 10 Pro.

I can't give you a definitive answer as its a personal choice/gamble and nobody knows for certain what its going to be like. The reviews I've seen are saying go for it or go for it with dual boot and if you don't like it you can remove it. I've also seen questions (with no definitve answers) about what happens to your Win7 license if you accept 10, does it stay active or get erased, if it gets erased you are stuck with 10.

I've put so much effort into getting my PC the way I want it, I'm loathed to take the chance, Win7 is good for me, so why would I want something that has the potential to cause me a world of grief? That said the word seems to be its a great improvement over 8, more a choice thing if you are using 7.

I can live without Cortana, in fact I'd loathe something like that it would do my head in (are you old enough to remember Microsoft Office Assistant? Arrrrrrrrrghhhh)

It may make your machine run a smidgen (and I mean a smidgen) faster and have a shorter boot time too.

Personally I'm cynical, I see this as a move to more cross platform, same type of system for phone, tablet etc: Microsoft also want to tie you more into cloud based systems too (my data is backed up on drives next to me weekly using ghost software). I think its partly to get number up to help to boost its dominance in the market place.

I also don't like apps, and these flat bold icons that de rigueur right now, so there is nothing much that it has that I've seen so far that entices, your situation may be entirely different. There is no right or wrong answer, well not yet anyway.

I'd love to say Yes or No to help but right now I don't think there is such a thing. I may be kicking myself later when it turns out to be the greatest thing out there..........who knows.

Besides I'm sure there are others on here way more tech saavy than me to weigh in, I don't even use a mobile phone FFS!!

  8. dont do it. it will fuck it.

  9. If your working fine stay as you are especially if your not PC literate like myself :)

  10. The security of the no longer supported XP will only get worse with time, I would not do anything remotely sensitive on an XP machine, not even e-mail.

  12. XP - OK
    Vista - Crap
    Win 7 - OK
    Win 8 - Crap
    Win 9 - Doesn't Exist
Win 10 - Should be OK, but I bet it isn't.........

  13. Thanks @johnv no probs, she does a bit of email on it, but that's about it and nothing that's sensitive. Besdies any hacker would be easy to find, he'd be fast asleep at the keyboard being about 5% through reading her mails.

  14. I may be stating the obvious but hacking a primary e-mail account opens up the possibility of resetting passwords to the rest of your life. It just depends upon how complicated the rest of your like is as to whether this is an acceptable risk or not :)

  15. I guess I'm lucky............still using XP Pro on a daily basis for at least 12 hours a day.............but I do have a lot of protection on it.....

.....(I pulled a couple of condoms over the desktop PC)...........so far so good..........

Restting email account passwords isn't too much of an issue as far as I'm concerned..........even if I do use 9 email addresses.........

..........if email got hacked; I would shut down the relevant account and come up with a new one.

As for Word and Excell etc, well.....I don't do anything with them that would mean they end up where they shouldn't.

I never exit the browser regardless of which one I use without doing a 'clear down' immediately afterwards.

I'm resigned to the fact that I will have to 'upgrade' at some stage, but unfortunately that would mean all the programmes I use on XP for work and other stuff would have to be renewed, because over half of them won't work on later versions of Windows........££££s!!

  16. Until recently I was working for a multi billion dollar Forbes 500 listed company still using XP Pro on critical systems, again because the software would not run on newer machines :Wideyed:

  17. Get a Mac

  18. If you're running xp then you should really upgrade; especially if you are using it for any business or internet banking or paypal (especially paypal as it asks for your password in full each time)
XP is full of holes. Common knowledge.

  19. Full release is not until 29th July , current build is 10130.
If someone is telling you they can give you a non beta now they are talking twaddle.

  20. To add to my last...

Hackers find first post-retirement Windows XP-related vulnerability | Computerworld

If you open the link (trust me, it's ok ( I think!)) then you'll see how easy it is to exploit XP
Same goes for the link in my signature block. Do you trust it? Should you trust it? Could it be a malicious site or just me posting stuff about bikes? If you're running xp then you won't know either way till you've been hacking and your life potentially fucked. (I've not put any malicious code on my site but someone else could have...)

I could tell you more but I normally charge £1000 a day for the privilege :upyeah: but happy to offer free (limited) advice to forum members :)
