Hi I have some wires on show tucked away under the steering damper that seem to attach to the top of the coolant reservoir. What do these connect too? Can I just get a new rubber sleeve? What would you call the part so I can order it? Thanks.
That's the air pressure sensor. That boot fail is quite common... it just gets old. It's not available as a Ducati part, but pretty sure you could find one on eBay or such like. Maybe even off an old loom. In the mean time, tape it up to stop water ingress
And have a look here for details on free link to parts lists for your bike. Ducati Omaha - Ducati OEM Parts Ordering System - Parts Fiche - Ducati Parts Good for reference and stops you sometimes having to ask the obvious
I believe it's an AMP 'superseal' connector boot for waterproofing connectors (not sure if a 2 or 3-way?) but they're readily available on ebay etc for not much money, e.g. 2 3 4 5 6 way pin TYCO AMP Superseal Waterproof Connector Rubber Boots Sleeve | eBay Only downside is that you'll need to remove the connectors from the plug to fit it which is a bit of a PITA but doable.
If you decided to take the connector apart this will help http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/38221.pdf Instead of the extraction tool I use a small flat blade precision screwdriver.
If you want to practice I can send you an old connector with wires attached. Just need to know male (pins) or female (sockets)
At worst you would need to replace the whole connector and pins along with the boot, they come as a complete set normally. This would mean removing the old connector, which is easy enough. Use the old connector as above to practice and it will soon become obvious. It is possible to just replace the boot by splitting a new one with a knife and supergluing it back together, I have seen that done and it worked and looked OK, it just depends on if you want it to look totally original or just want to protect the wires.
Worst case scenario is you break a pin or two, or even the body of the plug. They are cheap enough to just cut the plug off and replace everything but be sure there's enough wire and you can crimp the new ones properly before taking such drastic action...
Thanks a lot guys, I have bought 2 & 3 way as they are so cheap and look useful. Will do the super glue approach as a temp measure next rainy day and have a look to see if it is male/female. @chrisw , I will PM you with what it is when I do the temp fix, then I can do it properly after a practice run. Thanks for the offer of the part.
So, covers 2 & 3 turned up and both to small. As I already had the old one cut off and half the steering damper off and the tank moved I wrapped it in black tape. Not perfect but better than wires on show. Will fix it properly in next winters strip down. Cheers guys
