Wiring Loom And Ecu

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Iant187, May 20, 2015.

  1. One of the main things I need to sort on this 916 project is a new wiring loom and ECU.
I see on ebay a few wiring looms and also ECU's for sale, I guess once I've identified the right ECU (and chip) that's pretty easy to fit????
Question is, I see quite a few wiring looms being sold, but how hard are they to fit? (it looks a bl00dy nightmare at first glance!) Are there any diagrams anywhere showing how the wires route or what goes where (in simple terms). Have any of you fitted a whole wiring loom to a 916 (or 748 or anything similar) and is there anything I need to be aware of?
Also are there different looms for the 916? Did they change at any point? (mine is a 1998)
    Thanks

  2. what engine are you fitting

  3. I'm leaving the engine "as is" (standard 916) It's just at the moment there is no wiring loom or ECU on this bike so I need to fit a new one! :-/

  4. then fit a standard 916 one..........

  5. or get the part number for the loom that is specifically your age and model bike then search for one from there....

  6. I bought a 916SP engine loom and ECU for my 748.
I stripped it completely to have the frame sprayed
I fitted the loom before the engine
I found that laying it on the Frame gave a pretty good indication of where it went. Having been on a bike before it had "set" so it pretty much told me where it wanted to go and as Andyb says use a wiring diagram

  7. It's not too difficult as long as the loom hasn't too messed about with.
Start with what you know, then you're left with the rest...:upyeah:

I have an ecu if you need one, no chip.

  8. I assume yours is the BP model. If so the P8 ecu isnt the one for your bike,it will take the 16m one.The loom is reasonably easy to put on.Make sure the one you buy is complete as they come in sections.

  9. What happened to the original loom and ecu?

  10. Thanks guys, the original loom is sort of there, but very messed up so I don't know if I can even trust what is there, the ecu went "missing" - long story, there was a lot of "interest " in the bike and now it's missing a few bits!

  11. Nelson, is yours a 16m ecu off a 916? If so I'd be very interestedl! Pm me if it would work for my bike.
    Ta....

  12. There are two looms in the 748 - 916 series for the 16M type Ecu. Either will work providing you have the whole loom as the pin connections are different between the early and later ones. One loom has 19 pins and the other 21. There are some detail differences between some of the fuses and also the neutral switch connection but that is only a minor point.

The 748 - 916 manual gives very clear diagrams over several pages of exactly how to lay out the loom on the frame along with all other cabling. It can be confusing and complex if you don't lay it out correctly. The manual does stress the need for it to be done properly or you might find some wires rubbing through.

Make sure your rectifier matches the alternator connection, which is not part of the loom.

The loom comes in three pieces and the rear section comes in two lengths, either will fit a biposto but the mono version is longer and will need to be coiled up if you do end up with a mono one.

I have fitted several of these looms from scratch and it's easy when you have the manual which can be downloaded from several sites.

  13. Thanks for this Red, perfect! I'll download the manual and check it out. Thanks again.

  14. Stupid question coming up, but would the BP model always have 2 seats? I'll take a pic of my bike, but It's only 1 seat. How do I know what model it actually is? Could it be BP but with a single pod?.... Can I find out from the chassis number or anything?

  15. The rear subframe will be ali if single seat, also have no provision for the pillion peg hangers.
Sub-frame could have been changed of course!

  16. The biposto subframe is steel and will either be gold or silver, most likely gold in your case, unless it has been repainted. The alloy subframe is silver regardless of frame colour.

The ECU sits sideways and nearer to the petrol tank on a biposto and on a mono it is right at the back of the subframe with the ECU connection facing forward.

Seats are interchangeable but normally require some tweaking which really is a different subject.

  17. A mono seat could easily be fitted to a BP.....Cause they do look better.:upyeah:

  18. Ahhhh right!! It is a gold frame, so I guess it's a Biposto with a mono seat! Going to the garage to have a look at the other bits...
    Here's a couple of pics....
