World's Greatest Motorcycle Rides on TV

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by keninsussex, May 20, 2012.

  1. Just spotted that Henry Cole is on Travel Channel ...this week's is round the UK , the Lakes, Peak District down to Land's End on a Norton 961. Next week's looks like it's on the IoM.

Repeated various times during the week - on or around the 8 - 10 pm time on Travel Channel and Travel Channel + 1.

I've seen some of the US and European ones he's done and they can be quite entertaining. Good to see a general interest bike programme on TV too.

The link to the website doesn't seem to work if I paste it in, but if you Google 'World's Greatest Motorcycle Rides" you'll see some links the the Travel Channel website with more info.

    Cheers

  7. The IOM programme was disappointing, so were the 2 on NZ

  8. Shame if that's the case. Will have a look and see....

  9. By all means, watch it for yourselves, don't let me put you off!

  10. You should go for it, I live up here and a run down Loch Ness from Inverness to Fort William was always one of my most favourite rides, one Sunday we decided to go down the other side of Loch Ness though and what a fun day that was, we all knew the main route like the back of our hands, but this one really tested us, as a bonus we had Aleister Crowley's old house (Boleskine House) that was then owned by Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin as part of our journey scenery too ... fun times :)

I'd not spend a night near that place, very spooky.

  12. It really is a lot spookier than you imagine though, Jimmy Page during his tenure hardly stayed a night in the place ... He bought the place and arranged for a good friend to look after it, the house has been renovated since Crowley and Pages times of course ... a rich Dutch family who apparently own a pub nearby own the house now.

Apparently, Crowley during a six week or so demonic rant or something, unleashed evil that is not caged back .... I don't do this crap, just going from memory ... but anyway, recently I've been delving more into it and gonna hit my library soon about Crowley ... I know all about Jimmy Page and his time up here ... Jimmy was nothing more than an eccentric Rock star who thought it would be fun to own such a place.

    Interesting stuff.

Nobody lives there any more, a caretaker lives nearby and will call the police if he detects you, minimum arrival time from Inverness 30 mins, enough time to look over the place if you are that way inclined.

Some vids of the Crowley house (Boleskine House) for ya :)

Heh heh ... I like the fact this invader to the house found the current owners porno magazine stash :) (about 3.23)

  14.  thanks for the info I don't like the thought of messing with evil but would still like to visit at some point...
I shall find out more too.

  15. No worrys, its people that are evil, not houses ... Jimmy Page just bought the house for its infamy IMHO, but for sure Crowley had some major screws loose that I will be researching more :)

But yeah, asides from all that, good roads both sides of Loch Ness, also too if you like music, around about this time of year we have the annual Rock Ness music festival, arguably the best backdrop on the planet, sunrise and sunset especially :)

  16. Just adding to the thread (its an interesting read) the longest run I ever did on a Bike was John O Groats to Lands End in the 80's ... not all in one go, slept over in Nottingham of all places, it was not even a planned route (no GPS back then) and I got lost lots of times that looking back was half the fun :) It was something I needed to do though.

I often think back to Cornwall and the great roads there ... I'd live there in a heartbeat, Newquay especially.

    But yeah, interesting thread.

I think one of the best rides available to download or watch? Is Ewan McGgregor and Charlie Boorman's "The Long way round" some of my more snobby Biker friends scoff at it because they might be able to do better or something and it demeans them in some way? some think because Ewan is a successful movie star it was handed to him on a plate ... this is so not true, he is from a true Biking family, his Dad is a Biker and so is his brother Colin who lives in the same town as me .. Colin until recently flew Tornado's at RAF Lossimouth and is now a retired military pilot but still flying ... he sometimes writes for the local paper on Motorcycling ... I think its fair to say the McGregors are a good Biking family.

This is from 2005, but still relevant.

The other thing people forget when mentioning The Long Way Round or The Long Way Down, is it was a documented adventure for charity first and foremost, of course they had a support team, half of it would not be filmed otherwise :)

    What great adventures though.

  17. Long Way Round

Ukraine ... this is a condensed ver, gotta love the local Mafia guy :)

We have to admit though, no matter where we travel most people are good, its politics that make us corrupt.

  18. I watched the Worlds Greatest Motorcycle Rides this af.... route was interesting and some of the places he visited.... but was gobsmacked when he was on how about how hotels have improved in the 15 years he's been doing this..... he's bloody crap - how the hell can you make a living doing this for 15 years.... our road trip blogs were way better! the narrative was dire.... and i wish i had a tenner for everytime he mentioned the great british norton he was riding... shod with italian tyres, italian brakes and swedish suspension!! Were they sponsoring him ?? - Also spent a lot of time sporting Norton T shirts!.

  19. God ,I can't stand that man:mad: Just watched ITV4 last night and tonight, and all he was doing was raving about Nortons TT entry. 40ft artic, all the bells and whistles, and a half cocked effort. Funnily Henry failed to once mention the dreaded Aprilia word.

  20. Blimey! You lot are hard to please.

Not saying it's the greatest programme out there, but after all it is a bike programme (one of the very few!) and no doubt done on a shoestring.
