I need to replace my bar grips as they are very worn. Ducati don’t sell just the rubber grips. Has anyone found a decent aftermarket grip set that fit nicely with the heated grips. It’s a 2013 1200s touring with factory heated grips if it makes a difference.
I think I’d prefer something that looks a bit nicer but is a back-stop option if I can’t get anything else.
The factory heated grips are an integral part of the grip itself. As @Twin4me and @TonyMNo1 suggests, something that goes over the existing worn grip, such as cricket bat grip, is probably the only way to retain the OEM heated grips without buying those again. Another experimental alternative is to buy a set of after market heated grips and hope that the impedance is the same as the factory ones and splice them into the existing wiring.
My preference is for fatter than standard grips so I use Grip Puppies https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13550302...cvhGA8IwQ5e3zed3Wd8/djsDXG|tkp:BlBMUMrxlvDeZQ They go over OE grips so that saves replacing your heated grips.
I tried these for a while but found I didn't like the numbness as a result given they absorb pretty much every minute vibration (some might see this as a plus). As a result I found it certainly made the controls feel 'softer', only too much for me as I like to feel feedback through the bars. Additionally, I got fatigue in my hands from the larger than normal grip diameter which I'm sure would be fine after a longer period of getting used to them. As for replacing the grips, I'm sure I replaced mine on my first 1200 by simply cutting the grips off very carefully as not to damage the heating element under neath and used two right hand grips (again, I think? It's many years ago) in order to make them fit. I never had any issues and I think I'll be attempting the same on my current 1260 at some point. Edit: I apparently went with spider grips which I do remember... https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/heated-grips-replacing-the-grips.21106/page-2#post-399215 https://www.chapmoto.com/spider-peak-grips.html
There's a thread on the subject here, looks like the design will allow you to replace the elements under the grips as @freshage suggests. I think that the heated grips were reportedly not hot enough on the earlier models and Ducati revised the design for the 1260, how this effected the separation of the element from the grip, or not, I can't hazard a guess. However, as the OP has a 2013 model element replacement looks possible.
If it helps, my brain decided it could summon one memory on the subject... I used a stanley knife and very, very slowly made slices along the grip (horizontally), going ever so slightly deeper in cut each time until the grip was able to be pulled/ripped apart. I'm sure I have some pictures somewhere, but the thread above has images which is where my memory sparked from And I do remember putting the new grips on was nigh on impossible without an air compressor and again. Which is why I think the spider grips was the choice given you'd order two sets and use the throttle grip on the LH side of the bar to accomodate the heating element.
I have a set of non heated grips, never used. Came off my 2013 multitrada, when I fitted oxford heated grips.
If you make the right colour choice + grip surface texture, they can look very good indeed. Mine are red and are close to the colour of the bike, and can be changed very easily, without any damage whatsoever to the heated grip structure, as well as maintaining the heated grip effectiveness. What's not to like..........
+1 on Grip Puppies - fitted a set two weeks ago. Took a few days to get used to the slightly larger diameter, but they're fine now. I'm used to Grab-On grips on my mountain bike, and these feel very similar. OEM heated grips work fine through them.
Hi Mark. For a fiver, I've just fitted these Chevron cricket bat grips over the existing worn Ducati heated grips on my 1260. Fit is spot on. Looks ok as the chevrons give texture and the heating elements work just as well as usual. For a fiver, it's saved a lot of hassle. https://ebay.us/m/wQ0LZy Good luck mate.
