Hi All, went out for a ride on my 916bp this morning, first chance i've had to ride it for about a month, started and idled OK ,pulled away and a quarter of a mile down the road it starts spluttering and as i go to open the throttle to give it more gas it feels like it isn't responding as it should ,with a huge flat spot ,dropped the revs and it seemed to respond better but again when i tried to give it some beans and upped the revs there was no real response until the revs dropped again. It felt to me like it wasn't getting enough fuel, anyway i persevered and it seems to have sorted itself out, stopped at a petrol station and put a tenner in and it started and rode as it should with no further stuttering etc. I'm thinking along the lines that could leaving it stood for a few weeks have got a bit of sediment into the fuel filter...just clutching at straws really, this is the first time it has given me any issues in 4 years of ownership, any thoughts appreciated?
@yellowducmaniac You may want to take a look inside the fuel tank and check the fuel lines that are immersed in the fuel. They tend to deteriorate with time and leave lots of small rubber bits that clog the fuel pump and/or filter. This is what it looks like when that happens.
Thanks for the replies, and yes i was thinking fuel filter and lines, although i changed the filter when i first got the bike and the lines looked OK at the time, i'll get the tank off and have a look, what diameters are the fuel lines so i can get a length ordered?
Make sure you get the correct spec of submersible hose, so many places sell fuel hose that they say is fine, but is only ok in a dry setting.
The hose is 5/16 (also the same for the in tank drain hoses) and the submersible standard is 30R10, the pump is 3 bar (43 psi) so go for a working pressure rating higher than that
Ok, found some suitable hose to order, does anyone know the rough combined length of all the submersed lines?
No not yet, but i will change the fuel hoses and filter anyway, although they do look Ok viewed through the filler cap hole.
Probably not this but, I had a fuel cut-off situation on my 916 due to expanding 'O' rings in the tank connectors, though mine just stopped as the fuel supply was completely blocked. No reason why similar couldn't happen intermittently though? See here for the details; https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/748-breakdown-x2.102833/#post-2248592
I'd also check the fuse under the seat near the solenoids. Mine had a dodgy connection there which caused high resistance and heat that melted the fuse. Symptoms were similar.
Mine also melted the fuel pump fuse holder and fuse, it was a sticky lump of snotty plastic attached to the wires - oddly was still working though.
Had similar issue a few years back. Under load the engine would splutter and hold back. In my case it was that all tank hoses were bulging under pump pressure and fuel was spurting back into the tank. Replaced all hoses as well as filters pump etc. Been great since.
