999 Oil Mesh Filter?

  1. I was hoping to clean the oil mesh filter that sits just underneath the sight glass. I've removed the plug and washer but I can't see anything inside that looks as though it pulls out, just a hole.

Should I be seeing something or has a previous owner removed it and if it is there how does it come out?

    Thanks for any advice.

  2. You need to unscrew the filter. Use the same size hex drive you used to remove the plug.

  3. This is what you should have.

  4. Thank you. Is it recessed about an inch into the crankcase?

I'm wondering whether to risk checking this filter, is it just my bike or are the hex drives normally a worryingly loose fit?

I know the manual says every two oil changes but realistically how often do people check this filter?

  5. I don't have a 999 but, for what it takes I'd be checking it every oil change if, for no other reason than potentially catching something before it's done too much damage.

Thinking of my 916 with flaking rockers and my M900, on which one of the clutch shaft bearings was breaking down and the first signs in both cases were flakes in the mesh filter.
