Hi all, 10 year's ago l purchased boxes of bits containing the remnants of a 1999 996sps minus engine. I later found a freshly rebuilt verified sps engine and spent many hours restoring it into a lovely LOOKING bike, boredom set in, other projects loomed and to cut a long story short it's spent the last 10 years as a very expensive ornament in my living room. Time has come to finally get this thing running and where it should be. Question It currently has a 916 wiring loom slapped on it to make it LOOK complete. I have the p8 ecu that came with the engine. I have a 996 wiring loom. And a 3 phase reg/rec. Is there anything I'm missing and will the stock loom work, the only difference i can see looking at the Haynes manual is wiring provision for power modules? Many thanks Shaun (Essex)
Short answer is no. As well as the power modules, the SPS runs a rpm sensor and a crank position sensor. The 996 uses only one to do both functions. The SPS is also running sequential fuel injection, bringing in the second injector when needed. The 996 fires both injectors together. You need the SPS loom and the throttle body wiring to if you don’t have it.
Many thanks for that, I have in the last couple of hours worked out there's a timing sensor so compared the pin out on the ecu plug to those in the Haynes manual and it is indeed a sps loom (25 pins) that I have, although it's in a sorry state but I can sort that. The injector wiring is complete on the throttle bodies. Sooo I believe all I need is the power modules, amplifiers I assume (connected in line to the coils) Could you confirm please, and if so does any on hear have any. Again thanks
Sorry can't help you there. Type part numbers on interweb and see what comes up? Are you sure the P8 ecu is correct?
The amplifiers mount on the side of the P8 and will have their own connectors off the loom. They’re like hens teeth, so you’ll need to do some hunting.. When you say timing sensor, are you meaning singular? If so, you’re one short. Both are the same component and connectors but serve different purposes. They both mount off the alternator cover, again with corresponding connectors on the loom.
There is a chap on Facebook called Tommy Beckett. He is a very good source for parts of this era of bikes. But you will pay top dollar if he has anything. You may or may not know but you will need a Tacho for a P8 ecu. The more common Tacho"s for the 16 ecu will not work. P8 tachos are also like hens teeth and people ask close to a grand when they do appear for sale There is a guy on here TimK he is a 916sp specialist prepares bikes for the Classic TT who may be able to help
Not sure whether this is any use but Bosch make single, dual and quad channel modules with the same plug. They look different to the Ducati ones but if mounted to a heat sink, may work. You would need to check that the wiring is the same. I can dig the pinout from my MoTeC drawings if you are interested.
This may of no use whatsoever - please do some more homework, but those connectors for the amp look very much like what I used to run on an old race car, which also used Bosch (dual channel) amps....they were getting rare even 10-12 years ago, but I'm sure somebody then told me that they're also a (dont laugh) part used by Volvos, and I believe had an equivalncy p/n....obviously lots of cross-checking needed but it may give you a steer when searching. ETA - I just dug out a doc for the same modules I was planning on using on a later car project (which is when I probably heard they were getting hard to get). This is the PDF I found, which may help with cross-comparisons...I was using the Type A package, 2ch on race car, 3ch on the follow on project (hence yellow highlighting - ignore that)
