Replacement Rev Counter Lens For 2005 999s

  1. Hi all, sorry if this has been answered elsewhere (I did look but couldn't find a definitive answer) but is there a replacement Rev Counter lens available for the 999s?
I've been having a search on T'Internet but can't find anything that looks like it will do the job and I don't want to spend £350+ on a second-hand unit just for the lens

  2. Thanks, looks like it might be a good option but I'm not sure if the lens is flat or has a slight curve to it? I'm planning on taking the dash apart to have a look but if it's flat, then I'll give this a try :D

  3. There's a guy on here I'm sure was making them for the 916/996 series, I bought one from him

  4. It was @Petsmith who was making them, including domed lenses for temperature gauges, might be worth dropping him a dm

  5. Thanks for that Ivor, I'll DM him and see what he says :)

  6. That's why I posted to be honest.
Getting the Old one out and creating a clean hole for the new one is the challenge without doing more damage.
I believe they are manufactured as a two-shot molding, not glued together later.

Second time round when the whole dash was smashed in an accident I was luck to find a used unit with good plastics at a great price.

  7. I had a word with Petsmith but he can't help on this one, as he only makes flat lenses and I think the 749/999 ones are slightly curved :confounded:

  8. Sorry for the false hope

  9. I'm half-way through busy replacing the lense on the oil temperature guage on my 996, so have read all the threads on the subject. If you find a flat lense it is fairly simple to make it into a domed one in the oven.

    Halfway down post #1 here

  10. I replaced a 916 temp guage glass with a 2" domed watch glass.
You might fined a clock domed glass that fits

  11. No need to apologise, it was always worth a try ;)

  12. Good idea, I guess you'd have to put in on an upturned plate or similar, so that it takes that shape as it warns up?

  13. No, I think let it sag into the glass, that way it will be even. (Hypotheses)

  14. I've been down that road. There's a very fine line between poly carbonate softening enough to be shaped and it being too hot and your lens being a total mess with bubbles or thinning out, having fingerprints, tool marks etc. Certainly my kitchen oven isn't keeping the temperature reliably in the range so I found that I had to throw 2 lenses away for every one that turned out satisfactory. The theory of the material just sagging into some kind of mould didn't come true for me either. I made some tooling to be able to shape the lens. It's a positive mould rather than a negative which is how these things usually are shaped. At least my discussions with people who are or were in this kind of business indicates that's the way to do it. If I really wanted to make one for myself, sure I can do it but it's not as easy as it seems.
I've given up trying to make them in numbers as nobody in their right mind would pay what I would need to charge to make it worth my time.
You may find a watch glass for the temp gauge but the larger ones are a lot more difficult to find of the shelf. I looked but I could not find anything suitable.

  15. Thanks again for your input Petsmith, I'm beginning to realise that I may have to live with the crack, try to find some way of "filling" it (as per car windscreens?) or just stump up the £350+ for a second-hand dash :(

I didn't realise that finding parts for the 999 would be so difficult/expensive (compared to my previous bike - 1999 Honda CBR) but live and learn :D

  16. I was lucky with the one I picked up used on EBAY, the vendor dropped the price significantly when I asked him if he had the matching ECU because one is useless without the other.

I brought it and had the Immobiliser disabled in the ECU, but you'd only need the Plastics of course.

  17. What I have done for my 996 is purchase a gauge from a Cagiva Mito that has the exact same bezel and glass, maybe with some research you could do the same and find another motorcycle that matches the 999?
