Valve Clearance Question

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by West Cork Paul, Feb 11, 2026 at 11:02 AM.

  1. Would anybody have any input into why, for the Testastretta 11o engine, the workshop manual has the inspection aka service limits exactly the same as the assembly value limits?

On every other engine there’s usually a wider acceptable service limit range. eg if the factory assembly value clearance is 0.13-0.18 the service limit may be 0.10-0.25.

Is this purely a misprint in the manual (not unknown as it happens)? I’m struggling to find any logic for it.

  3. Not sure I understand the question, every other Ducati engine or every other non Ducati engine ? Given the valve collet and bucket shim combination used on the Ducati, why wouldn’t the inspection tolerance be the same as the build tolerance ? Andy

  4. In the service manual I have for a 2015 Multi 1200, these are the values quoted.

They are so tight a tolerance, that I assume they are the same as the assembly values too ???

  5. This is the Hyper 939 clearance info. The values seem much more realistic...

  6. The Supersport 939 & 950 are the same.

  7. Every other Ducati engine with Desmodromic valves.

When the factory assemble them the clearances always come out within a certain range eg 0.13-0.18. As the valve beds into its seat the clearances change; closers get bigger and openers get smaller.
For pretty much every other Desmodromic Ducati engine there’s an acceptable range eg 0.10-0.25 before it’s recommended to change a shim to get back to within the original range (or as near as dammit), eg as per @Keith_P ’s post.

I haven’t bothered to ask the question before but have wondered about it for a long time so thought I’d throw it out there this morning.

  8. Yep, those are the assembly values. Thats the same engine just with the addition of the DVT gubbins to move away from the fixed 11o overlap.

  9. Where did you source your manual? Not all are created equal. There are a lot on the 'net that are littered with errors.
The couple I have looked at, carry the same figures as in Keith's post... The latter figures are for inspection.
    Opening rocker arm - intake 0.13 to 0.18 mm - 0.10 to 0.25 mm
    Opening rocker arm - exhaust 0.13 to 0.18 mm - 0.10 to 0.25 mm
    Closing rocker arm - intake 0.05-0.10 mm - 0.05 to 0.15 mm
    Closing rocker arm - exhaust 0.05-0.10 mm - 0.05 to 0.15 mm

  10. Misprint surely? If it’s correct it’s the first time I’ve come across this in 50plus years of spannering.

  11. That one is supposedly for a 2014 Hypermotard, but I’ve seen the same info in the MultiStrada 1200 manuals of a similar vintage.

I think I probably printed off the pages from rmi.ducati.com some time ago but models of that vintage are no longer available in there .

It certainly makes life easier (read less labour, less cost) if one works to the wider inspection clearances.

  12. I don’t disagree hence I’m struggling to understand the logic as to why some have a larger service variance than others when they’ve effectively all got the same valve trains.

  13. I just checked in my Monster Testastretta manual and sure enough there are service clearances with wider tolerances

  14. as ever, Thank you for sorting that out Neil @nelly. :upyeah:

  15. Hi @nelly , if it’s not too much trouble, I would be grateful if you could point me in the direction of a reliable, online workshop manual for a 2015 Multi 1200 dvt, cheers :upyeah:

  16. Honestly, I don't know of any as I've no need for one, so haven't gone looking. All my resources are factory supplied and in digital form now.

  17. That’s just the thing. I’ve a Ducati document for the valve service on the 2015 DVT (excerpt attached below) and it’s stating there’s no acceptable service range, it’s just the factory set range at time of build.

So we come back to the original question - why no acceptable service range?

ps. I also deleted the photos from the monster manual above as I realised they were traceable to me and they’re not supposed to be shared tut tut tut. But, for readers in the future they were the same as those in Keith P’s post.

  18. Is it worth an email to Ducati to confirm the service clearances?
