Hard to say imo. When did Tamburini first dream up either of them? The Monster arrived first in '93, its massive sales saved the company from bankruptcy therefore paying for the 916 to be made.
No noticeable consumption so far. I have no service history but I think it was looked after very well for most of its life and wouldn't be surprised if it has been rebuilt at some point.
The 916 definitely gets more attention, as mentioned it crosses over to a non bike audience. The monster has an important place in Ducati's history but wasn't as ground breaking.
After looking at biposto conversions I decided to give an aftermarket mono seat unit a try. Ordered it straight off AliExpress and took about 3 weeks to arrive. I'm pretty happy with it for the price, it's the right shape and red haha. Fitting was pretty straight forward, I had a mono tail light bracket and seat already so after swapping everything over and drilling some extra holes for the seat (the unit came pre drilled for the bip seat only) I just needed to sort a spacer. I had seen a 3d printer file online so I tried that first but at 36mm it was sitting too high so I drew up another one and printed them at 30mm, 25mm and 20mm. In the end I made one more at 22.5mm and am now happy with how it sits. The last job to do is to sort the vent holes, I have some expanded aluminium mesh but it is slightly bigger than factory and I have been a bit hesitant to use it as I don't love the silver mesh look anyway. If this bike was a pristine example it would be a no brainer to keep it stock but I was tempted to see what I could come up with as an alternative. Enter the 3D printer again. I drew some louvres up in CAD and was surprised how much I liked them, I'd like to hear others opinions. The bike has black wheels and frame already so these fit in that respect.
Great work, that looks pretty good for an aftermarket piece. I've been toying with the idea too but it's getting hold of a mono seat thats partly stopped me doing it, I didn't realise they come pre drilled for the BP seat. How do you think the BP seat would look as an interim?
I reckon the bp seat is fine to use, I would have done the same if I hadn't found my mono seat. Only a 916 trainspotter would know the difference I forgot to mention the decal on the back is from the factory, I also bought the foam pads that stick on the underside.
