  1. Are you planning to press in new bearings?
This tool is for doing that.
If you're just removing the yoke/stem, you don't need it.

  2. You won't be able to weld that back on. You may be able to build up the area with weld and machine it afterwards but with the slot that won't be looking great either. That's if that material is weldable. Cast ir forged aluminium is mostly of a non weldable composition. You can stick it together for non structural stuff but there won't be any strength. I do quite a bit of aluminium welding although as a hobby. I personally wouldn't touch that.

  3. I don't know. I've got the bearings. Once upon a time I'd have replaced them as a matter of course. But if they're okay I expect it's more trouble than it's worth.

  4. Yes, that's pretty much my fear.

  5. call me old fashioned.....but what exactly are you trying to do?
the forks will just pull or fall out of the upper and lower yokes once all the clamps are undone.
the upper yoke will lift or gently pry up off the steering stem nut once the clamp is undone
the steering stem top nut will undo very easily and the bottom yoke and stem will drop out from the steering tube
the steering tube (looking at your pic you do have an adjustable one) you don't need to remove the two circles retaining the two pinch bolts holding the steering tube in just undo them a turn or two and the steering tube will drop out the bottom.
you can then knock out the bearing cups to replace the head bearings.
the universal puller may well be to remove the inner cone part of the bottom bearing but as you've buggered the bottom yoke you don't need it now.....

  6. Give that Irish lad a ring that features on Matt Armstrong vids. He’s ace he is… :D

  7. Starting from the last point: I haven't buggered the fucking bottom yoke.

For the rest of it, I've built a number of bikes in my time, including a Laverda Jota I then rode hard for 25,000 miles.

You appear to be reading selectively.

  8. ^^^ arse on alert…

  9. there are several bottom yokes available on Ebay circa £300 iirc the previous model 748 998 is the same I think the steering stem on a 1098 might be shorter or a different top nut...

you appear to be buying using asking welding a lot of stuff that isn't required....selectively or not. Anyway crack on im sure its be great.

there are loads of bottom yokes on ebay 748 998 etc are the same...circa £300!

iirc the 1098 steering tube might be shorter or it uses a shorter nut worth asking for a measure

  10. Depending on whether the yoke clamp broke because someone overtightened it or it's an effect of what bent the forks, I may have rode with it like that and it handled fine.

Or it introduced an instability that contributed to the loss of control that bent the forks!

If I got it welded, I'd use the one @Nasher offered and have the steering stop welded rather than the clamp on mine.

However, I'm trying to order a new one from MSP. In perspective, it's not so much. I just have to go into town and wind a few fucks into my bank for declining my payment (and then messaging that they're waiting to hear from me about it via the app - which I don't have). I believe it's because they think I must be a doddery old pensioner. I'll wear my usual attire - a black Ducati t-shirt for today - but it distresses me that I can't take an old fork stanchion and smash the place up.

  11. ?

  12. You appear to be buying using asking to justify your original unwarranted demeaning response.

  13. For me, the lack of confidence is in the knowing.

Recently I discovered the top bolt on one of the shocks on the Darmah was loose & bent with subsequent investigation showing the swingarm was also bent. I'd been riding him reasonably vigorously for a good few weeks after what I think was the (pothole) cause without a care in the world.

But as soon as I discovered it I daren't wheel him out the garage.

  14. Yeah. Know what you mean. Though the only thing that comes to mind is when the seal on the 900 shock went. On a hot day I was on the dual carriageway going past Sainsbury's. My first thought was petrol was pissing out and I needed to remove the risk of fire asap. Then I put my fingers in and smelled it and figured it out.

It's like Steve McQueen on hearing how many Roger plans to take out.

Meanwhile the order's gone through now. They ask by text if it was me. They couldn't have asked before I ordered it three times.

But of course, they did! They sent me a 6 figure no. to put into the verification field, which I verified with, then they declined. Three times they texted me 6-figure numbers I verified with. And eventually texted me to which I replied 'Y' - and that one satisfied them. The stupid fuckers.

  15. As predicted, special tool arrived. So now the bottom yoke is off. Now to wait for the new one.
