Ducati 748SPS winter overhaul- paint repairs/polishing advice

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by ChrisT70, Sep 21, 2013.

  1. bike stripped and new shiny exhausts back from polishers, look sweet when fitted up tonight.sump painted after rubbing back all the peeling paint, and starter motor repainted. 25 quid for polishing was a bargain, saved me hrs. new fairing stickers on order from cornerspeed, then fairing can got for a touch up.

  2. Looks nice, keep going!

What did you paint the sump with?

  3. just some smooth hammerite silver i had left over. wire brushed back and some metal primer (grey) after that then brushed on silver. how long it will last i dont know, but its way better than the flaking crap that was there!

  4. Looking good, are you going to remove that nasty looking Agip tank sticker, plain black would look better

  7. I fitted this exact one on my 996 over the weekend and am pretty impressed. Normally id just mask it off and spray it using generic white spray from a car parts place, but this time I thought id opt for the sticker approach, mainly as it also came with gold pinstriping which matches the number board on my single seat unit perfectly.

The quality of the item is good, and fitting was easier than I expected. I used the wifes hair dryer to soften it and make it more pliable in some places as well - such as where you fold it around where the bottom of the screen goes & above the headlamps. I took my time over it and I think theres only 1 small bubble ive noticed between the headlamps on it, which will probably reduce once its been on there for a while.

I wasnt 100% sure about the look initially after I finished it as I was so used to the plain red nose cone, but now love it and it really sets the bike off.

  8. Fraid not! :) I'm in love with it lol:)

  9. Thank you for that I will have a think.

  10. well the oe ducati fairing stickers arrived from cornerspeed, bargain at 6 quid odd each, might order some spares for future just in case. off to painters on friday fingers crossed.

  11. I was going to mention the OE sticker price...I purchased the whole set for my '96 916 from Ducati, it was difficult to find them as they aren't produced anymore but the overall cost was peanuts compared to the whole respray quote. I wouldn't go down the repro route at that price, but as you have found like most things, the OE parts are sometimes are a nice surprise cost wise.

  12. amy recommended suppliers for good quality plain pads please?

  13. Try eBay for a clear pad from someone like Bike-it. The paint shows through and looks much like you have no protector, if that's a look you want.

  14. Seat now retrimmed in alcantara . 40 notes all in locally !

  15. kudos on the hammerite..

think i'll be playing that game, as my 916 is spoiled by the flaking paint...access is a barsteward though around the swingarm/shock area..did you remove the shock?

this progress is making me horny.

  16. Looks neat and a good price.

  17. Luckily I didn't need to go as far as removing the swingarm as I caught it just before it got too bad just below it. The engine cases had all been painted quite nicely at some point in its history so it was just the sump itself really. New front brake switch fitted as well while fairing off and touched up black paint surrounding headlights. Fairing should be back from apache paints in a week or two. The mini refurb might be done before winter as I'm running out of jobs lol!

  18. If you are feeling brave while its off the road I would be tempted to try removing the swing arm mounting bolt and re-greasing it, they can be a Ba##ard and if you are lucky yours might come out without to much trouble, when I changed my engine to the 853 last winter it took me a full day to remove mine and since i have taken it out another two times just to check it will, its now on my annual service to remove and grease along with the usual service.
