Hi all, I'm in the process of getting the frame resprayed on my 998. Whilst the engine is out I thought I'd give it a bit of a tidy up. I spoke to RS paint supplies and they are able to provide me with the etch primer, engine paint and a satin lacquer. However the paint isn't high temperature proof. They said this would be the same process as factory. I only need to do certain parts of the engine so I thought this would be the easiest way to get a good match. Has anyone had any experience going down this route?
Use the forum search function as this has been discussed at length including the use of finishes like Ceracoat. There is some very useful information discussed. Andy
Thanks for the quick reply. I did have a good search about but couldn't find anything regarding normal paint rather than HT. Would you be able to point me in the right direction?
I've painted. Two ducati motors with an etch followed by vht engine paint (sperex from memory). Never used a laquer. Finish was as good as factory and lasted way longer. Time consuming bit is getting old paint off and all the masking but worth it. I use paint stripper from motor paint factors rather than the useless propriety stuff you buy elsewhere.
Try this guy. He did my GSX1100 Katana engine many many years ago and it was superb. http://www.aloh.co.uk/
Here's a couple of links, that I found helpful. The main thing I want to try and avoid is stripping the engine down needlessly but making it look good at the same time. https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/748-tidy-up.40704/page-2 https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/flaking-paint-on-engine.41496/
Stephen Smethurst did the casings on both of my Guzzi rebuilds @bootsam On my casings no paint applied but the finishing process closes the Aluminuim pores so nothing to peel off. He is certainly not the cheapest but I've got nothing but good things to say about the quality of the work and if needing to get casings done again, he'd be the first person to contact
I had to commute to National Grid, Guildford during a winter on my Katana all through the salty roads and it furred up something rotten. Anyhoo, I decided to restore her which I did. Sadly I sold her unfinished mainly because I needed the room in my garage. She was 90% finished but I'd run out of time, money and space. Stephen did my engine as I stripped it due to a knocking noise, which incidentally prompted the restore. I had thought crank mains, but had that balanced by straightline and all bearings and shells replaced throughout etc. Turnt out to be the damned camchain rear tensioner blade ffs. Just rattly on its fixing at inside of cyl block. Cheap fix. Anyhoo Stephen did a wonderful job and I agree it wasnt cheap, but I dont think it couldve been undertaken to a higher standard than he carried out. You gets whats you pays for and thats why your Guzzi is super sexy.
