Hi all, myself and a few mates are looking for a 5/6 day trip into Europe mid-June this year. Do any of you lot have any suggestions or routes you may have already undertaken? The Black Forest was mentioned, however we are a bit concerned it may be a little to far for 5 days. We are setting off from Lincs, so it is a good few hours ride just to get down to the coast! It will be my first European trip too! Many thanks all, Adam.
Consider the Hull Zeebrugge ferry starting the eve before hand to save on the Dover run. I take the Dover run myself but only if I can afford to add the day riding to my Jollies. The nearest riding roads would then be Belgium, Eiffel region around Nurburgring possible the area around Colmar. TB
Not sure if this is any help, but I did a cycling trip couple of years back in the Alps. We saw loads of folks doing the same routes on motorbikes and think it'll be something I'll be doing like that one day. We drove down to Bourg D'oisans (which we used as our base) and from there you can ride up and over Alp d'huez along the top to les deux alps or the other way to Col de la Croix Fer and on to the Galibier. It's a pretty impressive place…
Vosges mountains (AKA aound Colmar as suggested above). Possible to get there in a day depending on your location in the UK. Is your five days a door to door timeframe or boots on foreign soil? Vosges IMHO is better than the Black Forest, B500 is busy at weekends, quite a bit is 50kph and regularly policed. Vosges is a bit closer though, if you really want to do BF it's a day's ride out from there anyway. Alternatively Brittany and Normandy is interesting though roads not so challenging, depends what you want out of a tour. Have done LeHavre to Roscoff out of Portsmouth and Plymouth respectively. If you're into WW2 history, decent food and Calvados it makes for a good trip. Planning to do this again in September with my GF. Her grandfather is in a war grave in Normandy.
5 days would be great for doing WW 1 and 2 stuff in Normandy and Belgium . Maybe a bit short if you want to ride great roads Belgium has some good ones and there is a Ride magazine article that would be helpful Did the Vosges last year and it is worth doing ,good value biker hotel there too,5 days would just about do that Black Forest a bit too busy from my experience and heavily policed Moselle Valley really good ,biker hotel at Klotten a good base, close to Nurburgring, again 5 days would work here We leave from North East and always use Newcastle to Ijmuiden . Hull Zeebrugge ,as mentioned ,is definitely worth considering The best advice I could give though would be just get out and do it you will enjoy whatever you do .
Thanks for your replies so far folks, as for this, I don’t think we are really bothered. I guess we could push to leave home on a Friday and return back home the following Friday
Have a look at the Ardennes area. We went out as a group in the summer and based ourselves in Dinant staying at the IBIS on the river, which was perfectly located and its a decent newish hotel. Stunning area and great roads in all directions.
Ok so a bit of a meeting tonight, looking at Hull to Zeebrugge overnight ferry Ride to Nurburgring and stay the night Ride to Baden-Baden and stay 2 nights Ride to Reims and stay the night Ride to Zeebrugge for return ferry home Any tips or advice on the above welcomed
Hull ferry, you must be close. Eifel national park, can make the Biker Ranch cafe (biker meet place) in about 3hours. Good roads all around the region. Cochem good if not been before. Cream Revenge is not wrong. Fantastic mountain passes in the south of Switzerland, but the swiss hate anyone having fun!
Switzerland is fantastic. Scenery can't be beaten. Just don't get caught speeding. It's a tour not a race.
Luxembourg is good but watch out for cops.Zero tolerance to speeding and lots of resources seemed to be enforcing it last year. Stopped in a place called Vianden ,very nice.
