Opening Showa 41mm Ud Forks

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by 88Sport, Dec 25, 2019.

  1. Hi Guys

I am planning to replace the fork oil in my 750 Sport and it has the adjustable upside down 41mm Showa (from a 900SL).

I’ve only ever opened up old style forks so unsure of how to proceed, and what jack in the box is awaiting me. I assume that if I remove the fork caps that the spring is under some load so do I need a special tool or what? If anyone has a copy of a manual for these forks I’d be happy to work it out.

    thanks in advance!

  3. Hi, no, there is no spring loading on removing the fork tops. You will need to make a few very simple tools to release the spring pressure and strip the fork. If you are only wanting an oil change to freshen them up and there is no contamination of the old oil, you can change oil without disassembly ( undo top cap, slide outer tube down, invert, pump empty, wash out with something like 2.5 w shock oil, repeat the pump out process, leave for a day to drain, then refill with your choice of oil) but if you need seals etc, or if there is evidence of metal contamination in the oil, strip them. Loads of available guides from a search or even youtube step by step videos available I expect.
