Waterproofing Textiles

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Broduc64, Jun 15, 2020.

  1. Got caught out in the deluge today. Heaviest rain/hail I've ridden in, unbelievable.

Needless to say my cheap Hein Gericke with just a Sheltex membrane, gave up the ghost after about 5 minutes and poured in particularly inside leg seams, leaving me with soggy, cold danglies !!!

What product/process can you guys recommend to waterproof jacket and trousers.

Or best to invest in a decent textile suit.??

  3. Invest in a proper suit, something like Hi-Pro made to measure. Tried on a jacket up at NEC show a couple of years back and very impressive quality.

  4. +1 for the Hi-Pro suit. I too had a nosy at the Hi-Pro when I saw Hideout. I used to think my Rukka was good quality, but Rukka feels shoddy compared to the Hi-Pro.

And the Hi-Pro's safety is exceptional. It's one of the very few textiles to exceed the original (tougher) CE Level 2 tests – something many leather suits couldn't achieve – and way ahead of Rukka, Dainese or Astars.

  5. NIKWAX, wash in waterproofing, i used to use it on my Halvarssons jacket and trousers, works really well(jacket and trousers now fucked). I have Dainese Gore Tex jacket and trousers now, fucking pricey but the mutts nuts!!:upyeah:

  6. Strongly recommend NIKWAX. Used it for 13 years, commuting all year, and never needed anything else. Go Outdoors often has it on BOGOF deals.

  7. I have been using Rukka textile for years, totally waterproof with decent protection.
Now moved to Rukka leather, Coriace jacket and trousers, great protection and totally waterproof.
Also use Rukka gloves, totally waterproof.
    Boots are Daytona.
I know all this gear is expensive, but it lasts for years.

  8. Rukka's Coriace leathers look excellent. Thanks to a hefty discount, I got Gore-Tex leather gear that preceded the Coriace. It's incredible: the clothing that I've found comfortable over the most extensive range of weather. While I wouldn’t wear it in 30 C, it's comfy in British warm weather: the leather is vented and also uses TFL Cool. Yet it's 100% waterproof and – with the right base layer – comfy for winter commutes. Money permitting, I’d find it tough to choose between Hi-Pro or Coriace clobber. (Except you can get Hi-Pro made-to-measure.)

  9. Hi Pro a far superior product hand made in UK. I would say the best you can get. But it comes at a price, and tone honest some very good jackets and trousers available for a few hundred pounds too. Horses for courses.

  10. Laminated Goretex is the way to go. For waterproofing fabrics, Fabsil Gold.

  11. Agree.. I have had two laminated Gore-Tex two piece textile suits and ridden back from Europe in both types in torrential rain. Never gave up or leaked. Dane and Rev 'it. FYI the Dane i still have was short in the arm and the Velcro went in the end. Rev'it is better length ways but Velcro going after 6 years

  12. This reason is why I picked Hideout leathers over well-marketed brands. When I asked, Dianese couldn't give me a straight answer where they make even their Custom Works leathers! And many (all?) of their race suits only have an AA rating, which is crap :poop:

Hideout was transparent how and where they make gear (their factory in the UK:upyeah:). And Hideout has their clothing tested independently to the Cambridge High-Performance standard, which requires 70% better abrasion resistance than even an AAA rating. Their Hi-Pro clothing achieves this standard - which is incredible for a laminated waterproof - not just their leathers.

+1. MotoCAP is mega-useful, and its test results are – in some cases – frighteningly revealing.
