Do 888's Front Sprocket Drop Off?

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by wastegate, Aug 3, 2020.

  1. Had a 750 sport in 1987 and after the front sprocket dropping off twice at low speed when still running in, so I got rid. Started going over my 888 and you can see the chain has come off... sprocket nuts chewed up and the swingarm sporting lots of gouge marks under the hugger. Now it may be bad maintenance or a snapped chain, but I thought I would just ask to see if its a known issue.

  2. As far as I am aware, these stay on pretty well as long as you have the toothed locking washer maintained and it doesn't become too thin (replace relatively regularly if it looks worn). Show us some photos, as my 888 was maintained relatively well in its and I have no issues that I can see.

  3. As above. If it's been torqued on properly and the lock/tab washer bent over, I can't see you having a problem.

Don't understand why you had a problem with the 750 sport, either !?!?

  4. It is a different design on the 888.
No big nut or tab washer to bend over

  5. Ah, ok. I'll keep my trap shut then.......o_Oo_O:joy::joy:

  6. Like a 748/9*6 - lock plate and two small bolts.

  7. I would suggest bad maintenance and an overly slack chain slapping about. I would also invest in a case protector, in the unlikely event that the chain breaks and saves big holes in the case, which would be hard to replace. Not my bike, but a very similar setup.

  8. As I remember some of the very first batch of 750 sports in `87 ( errr I think ) had a quality issue with that. Have to say its always looked a much neater solution than the big nut and bent tab washer.
If its not a generic issue on 888 's then I will drop in a new toothed locking washer as maintenance and torque up as specified. One of the sprocket nuts was chewed so much two flats had completely gone and the swing arm has some grooves, I suspect a chain jumped or snapped. Will try and get a crankcase protector as that is a good idea, thanks everyone.

  10. I can’t see what you’re worried about @wastegate , in my experience front sprockets are securely attached to the output shaft, no need to worry about it flying off old chap :upyeah::joy: They don’t even come off when you want them to:(

  12. My 916 lost the lock plate many years ago after being worked on at a dealer - it was either never fitted or completely fell off?

I didn't notice until I took the sprocket cover off. said cover was lightly gouged on the inside (probably by the bolts backing out?) but the sprocket stayed on - it can't really come off the shaft unless the chain is super loose/worn/broken but it was free to move side to side a little.

If the lock plate wears (and they do) then it can also slide around, lock plates are cheap enough to check and replace (if/when required) during a service.

  13. Hi Chris, is the case protector an add on as there is one on mine, and each little thing I find I feel someone knew what they were doing with my bike and known issues seem to have been dealt with, i.e. alt cables plug.

  14. Yes it is an add on. Many people with those cases put it on as the cases have been punched through in the past with a chain breaking. Common addition on the 748 and 916 Models too.
